depending on your age  and when you went it will obviously differ . but here are a few ; sea pigeon in the ebor , last tycoon in the sprint , lester on absalom, sonnen gold for the easterbys, golden horn, sea the stars ...but nothing like  that electrifying day of frankel .

Good morning Windsor

Of course nothing can possibly compare with the day frankel came to York along with over 30,000 racegoers and the performance didn’t disappoint, just to give an example of the extra people on course that day the years either side of it 2011 and 2013 got 19,000 and 16,000 even the great sea the stars only attracted 19,000.

Frankel aside also all judmonte or benson and hedges are races to savour Troy the brilliant derby winner my first year at York ,assert pat eddery riding with a broken bone in his arm, ille de chypre the stun gun horse causing a big surprise beating his stable companion cacoethes,oh so wonderful in a 3 way photo ,greats like singspiel, falbrav, authorized sakhee and sea the stars,of course the unforgettable dual between the iron horse and kalanisi my personal favourite was the year the ground changed dramatically and the great Steve Cauthen and triptych ploughed through the ground and on a very wet afternoon lit up York ,you can have all your fancy races like the arc and that breeders cup nonsense and your stuff in the Arab world no race year in year out can produce what the York race can ,occasionally the Irish champion stakes can shade it.

Red clubs winning one of my favourite races the Coventry stakes at York is another great memory from York along with the entire week york recourse showing it’s class as it always does,

Vincent obrien the greatest trainer there will ever be sending out his last runner at york college chapel a huge crowd gathered around the parade ring unfortunately the horse could only come 3 rd to two great sprinters of the 90s lochsong and Paris house ,which brings me to sharpo 3 nunthorpes back then the William hill sprint ,the 3rd win Steve Cauthen was the jockey and said afterwards that’s the fastest I’ve ever been on a horse ,

The Dante also has so many good memories watching future derby winners sharastani and reference point in the 80s benny the dip and sakhee in the 90s then more recently north light, motivator, authorized, golden horn and desert crown who really could have been top class.

Sea pigeon winning the ebor you could only see it live are the itv were on strike and there’s no coverage of the race, quick ransom was a badly needed winner for my pocket that was the longest last furlong I’ve ever seen, the Great sergeant Cecil who had it won from a long way out now it’s on a Saturday I struggle to remember the winners not many things York do wrong but going Wednesday to Saturday is one of them.

Looking ahead new facilities will open on Wednesday and will be completed by August catering for Joe Public something York do very well.

As a child, Prince Monalulu.
As an adult, Frankel. Standing at the front rail in the grassed area of the county stand. Got my pitch there straight after the previous race. Awesome performance.

I was fortunate enough to watch Frankel 4 times in GB, but i would have loved to been at York, in my opinion, his most impressive win. I doubt there has been a horse in history that could have beaten him that day, but i don't want to start a 'best ever' debate, even though he's my fav horse.

Another good performance at York was Mill Reef who won the Gimcrack by 10L, and nearly didn't run due to the heavy going.

I came down for the 1st time around 1982, chester had been waterlogged so changed my mind and came for the mecca dante meeting, the ground was heavy and from top of my head Give thanks won the muisidora, on the wednesday  Dunbeath was 8/13 for the dante, and prior the race i talked with Henry cecil he was chatting to a important person by the look of things, i was very young then but henry came over and talked to me , the other chap i later found out was henry de walden,  i asked about Dunbeath and his derby chances, and was told" well wont win a derby if he doesnt win today", alas i put a ton on him for the race and watched as the wragg horse hot touch romped home. Cry  . The following race was a maiden and Malvern Beauty romped in at around 8/1 for the sir walden cecil team.      heres a video of that dante.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jjGei_xqs8w

I think my first attendance attendance at York would have been in the early 1970s. Among my recollections would be Alleged thrashing the oppostion in The Voltigeur, those top sprinters Sharpo, Morrestyle and Marwell, Sir Montague dotting up for Ryan price in the Ebor, Sea Pigeon. Great memories.
Report seaside May 13, 2024 12:56 PM BST
Went up there for the 3 day meeting and came back that evening having done every penny.
Report verbotene liebe May 13, 2024 3:45 PM BST
Missed Alleged  first establishing himself as a big player in the Voltigeur but was present the day before when the then rising star from Ballydoyle , Eclipse winner Artaius who ran in the Mrs Getty colours, had the opportunity to go to the top of the 3 year old rankings ( The Minstrel had already been retired to Kentucky) but fluffed the lines, beaten by Relkino. The Queen was also there that day, Dunfermline running in the Yorkshire Oaks but beaten into third behind Busaca and Royal Hive. Julio Mariner made his racecourse debut in the Acomb, and a favourite of many, Epsom Imp, won the concluding sprint handicap.

The Tuesday was for a good few years the only day in the GB racing calendar with two G1 races. Was also  Michael Stoute’s favourite racing day of the year. The racecourse also had a museum in the stands - that went some years back. Will have to get into the habit of going again as the venue apoears to have held its esteem together better than most contemporaries.

However earliest memory is Eddie Reveley trained Polyfoto winning the Nunthorpe in 1965 ,went on to win Prix L’Abbaye at 20/1 – my dad put on my 6 (old pence) ew so was I chuffed – OK Rico after timing but hey ho
