I noticed the same. It looks very sparse.

Perhaps even the Alderley Edge crowd realise that Chester is a rip-off.

A course that has got far above its own station - they even have a Tatts dress code, seeing it as a sort of second members enclosure. Went in the cheap seats and watched the races a furlong and a bit out. But could see that it was quiet everywhere. The outside bar in the Dee had the staff twiddling their thumbs most of the time, ( the other was closed) and the mobile bar nearing the furlong marker would have most certainly made a loss, so unfrequented it was.

It's all Willie Mullins' fault

Yes poor Willie gets all the blame , the great man should never be associated with that khazi

used to visit for the 3 day tuesday to thursday meeting , it really was a wonderful 3 days ,
|

I remember going about 30 years ago and the place was full of drunks and plastic glasses thrown all over the place. Never been back since and not likely to either.
|
|

Moderate crowd very unorganised racecourse big problems with the Wi-Fi nobody knew what the problem was I asked at the main office where do haydock recipicals go for entrance tomorrow they didn’t know ,no tea or coffee in tatts only alcohol.

Centre course doesn’t even open anymore use to be very busy for this fixture.
|
|
By:
First went in the mid 70’s - apart from the May meeting they then only held the Chester Summer Cup meeting ( clashed with Magnet Cup day), and the September meeting . It was a lovely, quaint venue back then. Fixtures have now been added left right and centre to pull in the cult crowds..
Not sure when things started to go wrong - maybe early 90’s, though it felt different and became more costly when the new County Stand was completed, after the original had been burnt to cinders by a couple of teenage delinquents around 1983. |

By:
jimnast ...county main entrance for recips . usually just flash anything that looks like gold and they will presume you have paid for the prosecco party package , directing you to a plastic chair crushed next 100 others in a space that once housed wheelie bins for chesterbet slips . wear that suit that only just fitted you 20 years ago but don't worry if you forget your socks . ...looking forward to a nice afternoon in the architect beer garden between races myself !

"..they even have a Tatts dress code.."
I've heard it all now. Pseud's corner anyone? |
|
By:
Biggest load of rubbish people blaming Mullins' odds on shots for drop in attendances when it's clearly been the cost involved with going racing. I'm sure we'll see a similar trend during the flat season.

In fairness first day always pretty quiet,Friday will be busy, wifi always been terrible hoping you'll then bet with Chesterbet!
|
|
By:
I'm a member of the ROA (I don't own a horse ,you don't have to)and I get every day there free!!!!!......glad to say that there were not many there at all......

Looked quiet. Same as last year when I went. A real shock to see what was such a big meeting now reduced to buttons in terms of those attending. Bu, to be fair, Friday will be heaving.
Mind you, I am a member at Pontefract and they had an exchange day with Chester for today! Now, can you imagine that in the 1980's, or even 15 years ago? No track would give up its premium days for reciprocals. Couldn't go today because of the train strikes and didn't fancy the drive over there and the £10 to park in the centre of the course - but not guaranteed a space! Mind you, don't think that would have been an issue.. A lot of us track regulars prefer the lesser crowds because it generally means no idiots. But, things are looking desperate now. Attendances seem to be falling everywhere for most days (not all) and atmosphere is mostly non-existent - Donny last Thursday evening was terrible with a tiny, tiny crowd. However, the BHA and Jockey Club prefer to spin it and go on about increased attendance at Newmarket last Saturday - ignoring how Friday's numbers there were pitiful. Those running racing are next to useless and, sorry to say, this game will be finished in the UK if / when media rights money starts to fall, or comes to an end from abroad. OK, things do change in life but it should not be like that solely due to incompetence and sheer stupidity... |

Showing my age but was taken by my Dad in 1960 when I was 10. Unforgettable experience. Set me on a life as a racing fan.
Went two years ago and it was the worst meeting I have ever attended.Corporate drunks everywhere, thousands of people who did not know a horse from a hedgehog. Officials like nazi guards at every gate and bar. Ties insisted upon , Tote returns a joke, Drink and Admission prices off the scale. What used to be a great and unique course for seeing now has a tented village in the centre which blocks the view of all but the last two furlongs on the rails. Avoid at all costs ( and you will save a lot !) Go ti Catterick, Pontefract or Wetherby where they will welcome you like old friends. Nottingham heard that it was my wedding anniversary and provided a bottle of champagne. At Hexham and Sedgefield you will see sheep. At Chester you will be treated like one. |

skipto'macari..
Am I right in thinking that the ROA scheme where non-owners can join and then apply for race-day tickets is about to be cut right back? I believe I am and that is why I did not join ROA again for this year. Another nail in racing's coffin...and, note what I say about regulars preferring low numbers. But it has gone too far now and I can see how we will surely start to lose tracks if the media money dries up. |

Thanks Windsor
I presumed it would be the county entrance but just thought I’d check yesterday ,regarding roa badges the craven meeting this season was only one per day no guest as is the case with Chester this week,as is Newcastle Sunday,York next week there are non available at all ,good choice the architect always get a good beer in there and they sell decent wine unlike the racecourse and the view from the wall is excellent ,I drove yesterday because of the train strikes however today the trains are fine for me fingers crossed I’m sure that can change, already got my socks ready . |

Times are changing in racing never do the firms offer prices in there racing post advert anymore just gimmicks and offers today coral take out an advert in the post
Jaw dropping style show stopping racing were here for it ,even timeform a once professional outfit have todays going at Chester as standard .racecourse security asking people why are they taking binoculars on a racecourse Wi-Fi been blocked so you can’t choose who to bet with, hardly any racecourse serving food remotely healthy,in the case of Chester only alcohol in tatts, haydock closing the family enclosure most summer Saturdays, the same course charging a fiver to park when it’s been free for as long as anyone can remember, aintree over charging Boxing Day on there first time of racing on that day clearly putting people of as the attendance indicates.uttoxeter not showing the big chase at Cheltenhams November meeting formerly the mackeson.racecourses charging extra to those who just want to see the racing not the concert afterwards, only a few racecourses catterick and Ludlow putting on courtesy buses from railway station and town centres, security on most racecourses totally incompetent when having to deal with a problem. And it’s all Willie Mullins fault |

Yesterday there was a lad ( looked a student) standing by the rail a furlong and a half out with an SLR camera ( no attached lense I might add). He was approached by two of the security team - one of them wore a trilby and had a military type moustache though not quite the full Windsor Davies, the other was in his twenties, probably learning the ways. The senior one chatted for a while to the lad with the camera, pointing to the final bend and to the other side of the rail ( as though the lad was going to climb over which he of course wasn’t), and in the end they allowed him to carry on. Looked like a show of authority for the sake of it.

Was that by the bend as the horses enter the straight ? |
|
By:
A little bit on from there - roughly 75 yards before the furlong marker.
|
|
By:
Ok I watched the first race by the bend and noticed a lot of security watching me I think they thought it odd someone watching a race on a racecourse

Jimnast that is a damning observation on British Racing but so true. I find only the northern rural courses worth patronising these days, apart from Aintree and Doncaster who have lost the plot , thinking they are more important than they are. Doncaster £8 to park on St Leger day, which is twice the price I pay for admission as a senior at Pontefract !

Teach the greed merchants a lesson and don’t attend, job done, after all they’ve been p!ssing on the fodder for years..
£8 to park,,,you must be mental…..imv |

Chester cant say it, but its obvious with their pricing they only want a " more respectable " type.
As they say in Scotland I fear their business model is " Hanging on a Shoogly peg ". |

£10 to PARK this has got to STOP. Surely we should all boycott racecourses that do this, regardless if we drive there or not?
