It is the lure of money that is the addiction.Gambling is the vehicle uses to get your hands on money legally.
How long would you continue to gamble if you got a cuddly toy every time you won a bet.?
And sadly people will look for other ways to get money (more than likely illegal) if governments try to curtail gambling.
Resulting in a very very serious society breakdown.IMVHO.

I'd disagree that the lure of money is an addiction. This is commonly known as greed - the incessant desire for money.
An addiction is any repetitive event or sequence of events that can stimulate something inside your brain/mind that gives you a buzz or a kick to make you feel good or utmost satisfaction; a reward is merely an added bonus, but not essential.

Gambling is a bit like going to see a show or a concert.You go and get a good feeling and take a risk that the concert will be good.
And you pay for the entertainment.

Women spend billions of pounds world wide every week buying make up to look younger,but they still get old,yet governments never ask,can these women afford this make up.At least a gambler has a chance of winning ,but the women who buy make up have no chance of winning

A show or concert could be expensive, but more importantly the duration is significantly longer than gambling where the buzz and (possibly reward) is almost immediate (instant gratification/utmost important). Similarly, the frequency too ie a repetitiveness which is over a short (very short) period of time is a massive attraction and buzz to participants.
I do not think there is any relevance comparing gambling (buzz/possible gain) and buying cosmetic/make up (vanity/confidence); government generally do not interfere (democratic ones), but the Blair government let go of the brake on gambling eg a ciggi smoker being exposed to easily available and cheap Class A drugs; some will obviously succumb and even addicted given time.

Addiction = immediate/instant buzz/gratification. As such, quick and repetitiveness are absolute must; instant and repeat - the key ingredients.
i was thinking,if a father could not afford a holiday in Florida for his wife and kids and placed a £100 ante post bet on Arsenal to win the champions league and Man utd to win the FA cup at the beginning of the season,would he be doing wrong in the eyes of the government if promised his family that they would be going to Florida if both teams win.
No. The culmination of the events is over many months, and the stake is comparatively small in terms of football betting. I'd categorise the bet as more of an ardent football supporter and possibly the teams too; Leicester won the league at 5000/1, and only that club supporter would be more likely to to back Leicester.
Take a guy who is in a bookie office everyday punting on all sports.he wears jeans ,his shirt is handing out over his jeans .he is running about diving in with his bets ,£20 on the fav at the dogs,yankee on the horses,backing football teams + a goal ,tennis bets,dart bets,and so fourth.
