The National is dead! Long Live the National! That's about all you can say. Our beloved race is now as recognisable as the invisible man.

Maybe they can arrange a few snipers to shoot a few horses at Bechers on the second circuit, proves the morons would not know the difference between a literal lottery and a horse race!!!

There was not a faller in the Race TOBY , 4 orses unseated , Great all safe and sound , but the Course is now a Minimal Test ,Grand National in name only
3 Races on the Course this week there has been 2 fallers and 6 or 7 unseats ,Incredible Figures

CagliariG, it’s the hype I take issue with. That race is no better than a handicap hurdle at Southwell. I’m interested in animal welfare so you can ban the garbage grand national altogether as far as I’m concerned. It’s only dimwit clowns like you that are keeping it going.

A dimwit answer from a closet animal right cross dressing clown who watches the Cheltenham Festival from a gay bar in Benidorm?
Correct me where I am wrong Autocue?

How many dead horses or jockeys do you need for a spectacle shafter? Would you like me to ask Jonjo about Alverton or Stefano's mum their opinion about the sport seen through the eyes of morons?

That sounds like a punk rock song - "Seen through the eyes of morons". What did your old man say when you went home with pink spiky mohican and safety pins through your skull - which you may have forgotten to remove?!

You don't need any horses dying for a spectacle, but the idea that because so many horses are in contention it's somehow a great race is cheerleading nonsense. Crisp v Red Rum was a great race, and there were only two in contention.

Object all you wish Autocue but I do notice you do not deny being Animal Rights? As for spectacles of the past, Jim Clark being killed and similar were spectacles DD, is that an era you want back?
This years GN was a race that did more for NH than any other in history in terms of promoting NH racing which imvho is more important than the 2 bob punters venting on here?

well, as is sadly normal, a perfectly rational discussion descends, thanks to the odd contributor, into disgraceful abuse. I walked the course on Thursday for the first time for about 20 years. Some of the fences staggered me. I could jump the first (with a few mattresses on the other side to avoid 68yo bones being broken) quite easily. It is no bigger than a schooling hurdle in France. I don't want jockeys being injured or worse, nor horses, but this race has as much to do with the GN of even 15 years ago as the Derby would have if they stuck 4 flights of hurdles in the way. It may be what some people want, but it has been part of my life for 50+ years and I am finished with it now. As Rico said earlier, it is indistinguishable from the long distance race at catterick or the Perth National (whatever it is called).

Fair enough DP but give us the facts and figures of every fence that has been altered that altered YOUR view as you say, I am sure the stats and measurements played a part i.e The Facts?

Well done Rico. As for the (ab)use of Stefano Cherchi's mum in his "argument", words fail me. A point about the nature of the race changing is used as a vehicle to suggest that the tragic death of a young flat jockey in a race is in any way relevant.

Nobody wants to see horses get hurt but the thing is there is no jeopardy in races over the National course anymore - and that to me makes them far less interesting. Races on the Mildmay course are much more interesting, though no doubt they will start to make those fences much easier as well like Cheltenham have done in recent years.
In the past there was the hope the horse that was going much better than yours might blunder or fall or get brought down etc (Clan Royal anyone?). Now you can call the winner after 3 fences.

I watched the replay of yesterdays race, then went on YouTube straight after and watched red marauders grand National from 2001. I got to admit, the red marauder one was way more exciting than what happened yesterday. I watched Minnehomas one from 1994 too. That was also way better.
As said above, nobody wants injuries, but the carnage was part of what made it a great race, imo.

Times have changed 'BoosterRooster'. I remember some shops punters cheered when the leader fell at the last when they were on the 2nd.
The Grand National is only a glorified handicap now no matter how hard the bookies' pundits try to spin it. The Grand National has lost its uniqueness, its reputation and kudos as the most difficult horse race over sticks. But, it's still fun for some esp once-a-year-punters.

The best bit in F1 is the dash to the 1st bend at the start. Then the wheel-to-wheel sabre-rattling and overtaking. Even this is negated by the DRS somewhat these days.
But, F1 is terribly boring now given Newey (Red Bull) who's head-and-shoulders above all the other car designers and down force experts in the game; the driver is lesser important eg Vettel.
