A truly fascinating puzzle which has an interestingly shaped market.

The Fav - Loup De Maulde – is slightly odds on, and it’s not difficult to see why. Since stepping up to 3m+  after joining  Robbie Llewellyn from Christian Williams as a maiden back in Oct 2022, he’s managed 6 wins and three 2nds from his 12 starts for his current stable. Most of those were over hurdles and include wins in class 3 and class 2 hcap hurdles and wasn’t disgraced when stepped down to 20f at Cheltenham in a 0-140 last April beaten less than 5 lengths. Had been raised to 125 over hurdles but was allowed to race off it’s old hurdle mark of 116 LTO at Huntington in a novice handicap chase and showed a nice change of pace in the latter stages to go clear eventually winning by 7l having looked tired in the closing stages where his earlier effort looked to take it’s toll. He’ll take all the beating with a 7lb penalty still in class 4, his potent late race surge likely to be decisive. His one achilleas heel is if something can keep in touch when he surges, since he may be vulnerable after the last when he could find the tank emptying.

For me the main danger is the generously priced - No No Maestro – a 9yo who has won 5 of it’s last 10 starts all those wins being in class 4 handicap chases. Has had his problems since he’s only had 3 starts since Jul 2022, and is returning from a 278 day break today. But that hasn’t stopped him in the past twice running second after 200+ day breaks. His  formline in 2m6f to 3m handicap chases reads 321132 and he looks a most consistent contender who's likely to run his race and even though he would prefer better ground he did win LTO on the soft and if the favourite falters could provide us with a nice payday.

My two bets on the race will be -  Loup De Maulde – to beat -  No No Maestro
and -  No No Maestro – at 9/1 EW Skybet – 1/5 first 3 (6 run)

The other 4

The current 2nd fav - Off To A Flyer – has two wins to his name, the first in a PointToPoint , the other in a class 3 handicap hurdle about a year ago which if repeated over fence would give him a good chance here (the 2nd and 3rd won 4 of their next 5 races). He did show promise since finishing 4th (btn 10l) in a class 2 Hcap Hurdle, but he’s been woeful in his last 3 starts since going chasing, being beaten 30l and pulled up on it’s last two. He’s had a wind op, but he can’t be backed until showing some of his old form.

The 3rd fav - Mortens Leam – is drifting like a barge, and it’s not difficult to see why. A 12yo who hadn’t won since 2021, managed to find a weak 4 runner race where his main market rivals under performed and he was chased home by a well weighted runner who was 7lb below it’s last winning mark. The handicapper was so impressed he only raised him 2lb for that win.

King Turgeon - is a 6yo French bred who was placed multiple times in France. Won a 0-110 nicely last November but has struggled in slightly better grade since (0-120 and  0-130). This is no easier but has time on his side and if reproducing last Novembers form would have place claims.

Bbold - has been a handicappers dream who after winning back in 2020 was raised by the handicapper from 116 up to 125. In his  next 13 start his rating oscillated between 125 and 128 even winning a couple of small field hcap chases. After leaving Dr Newlands stable the handicapper relented and after 3 runs for his new stable he’s been dropped to 111 (up 1lb for it’s last start), and has again changed stables and is now with new trainer Daisy Hitchins. Off since Last June when trading down to 1.67 from 19.23 in a hurdle race. Is an unlikely winner but does have back form which if fit and revitalised after it’s move would not be the biggest head scratcher if it bouncing back.
