Report Cider • March 26, 2024 8:35 AM GMT
Vessel was on emergency power, working intermittently. They had a physics failure as slammed the engines into reverse, which actually had the inverse effect of what they wanted to achieve and pushed the vessel into the bridge. Obviously would have been occurring amidst huge panic, similar to an airline pilot on a plane that has stalled.

A cargo ship that crashed into a major US bridge, sending people and vehicles plunging into the river below, lost power and issued a mayday call just moments before.

Crew on board the vessel managed to stop the flow of traffic by the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore saving lives in “a very heroic way,” Maryland’s governor Wes Moore said.

He explained: “By being able to stop cars from coming over the bridge these people are heroes. They saved lives last night.”

The ship struck the bridge at roughly 1.30am on Tuesday.

Dramatic footage of the incident shows the boat ramming into the bridge. Within 30 seconds the structure had almost entirely collapsed.

Mr Moore told reporters there are six people are being searched for in the water. The individuals are believed to be part of a group who were fixing potholes on the bridge when the crash happened.

Chief of Baltimore’s fire department James Wallace previously told reporters two people had also been rescued from the water with one person in a “very serious condition”.

You're f*cking obsessed with me ya creepy f*cker

So GEORGE.B actually bookmarks quotes from me, so he can post them out of context and I'm the creepy one?

Now let's get back to his post about Baltimore, the one that I criticised and led to the above.

This confirms who was actually behind the "event".  Less than one day and the govt is saying it was "an accident" and now the Feds are going to pay for the ENTIRE thing?? What about insurance? or the shipping Co.? Why? Because this will eliminate ANY actual investigation guys.

So GEORGE.B thinks that an electioneering Biden saying that the federal government should pay for the repairs/new bridge is evidence of a cover-up and conspiracy and there won't be an investigation and insurance companies won't pay out.

Anyone with a modicum of common sense would realise that this was a preposterous proposition. So given that, GEORGE.B is either simply a liar or is paranoid to the point of insanity and sees conspiracies everywhere. You also have to ask yourself what kind of sad man is actually reading and reposting twitter material from "UScrimeReview".
Report GEORGE.B • March 28, 2024 9:15 AM GMT
The point is anything they say should be questioned imo, and that is what the poster was doing in response to the clip of Biden reading from his teleprompter, asking perfectly reasonable questions because unlike you he's not a stooge for official narratives.

On this thread there are people who have given an opinion that it looks dodgy.

But you didn't reference their posts, only mine. Why? because you are a creepy f*cker who is f*cking obsessed with me.

The exact quote from Biden:

"It is my intention that the federal government will pay for the entire cost of reconstructing that bridge, and I expect the Congress to support my effort"

This is what the tweeter is responding to, and if you bothered to watch the clip, one of the reporters at the press conference had also asked why the shipping company isn't being held responsible, in response to what Biden had said about the govt paying.

Biden's response was that they're not going to wait for that.

So it was a perfectly reasonable tweet to re-post.

"Baltimore bridge collapse likely to result in multibillion-dollar insurance claims -Lloyd's of London"

So not a given then?
Report dave1357 • March 28, 2024 10:45 AM GMT
well obv insurance cos will try to welch, it's what they do.

Biden is electioneering - what do you think he's going to say? "Well, we'll have to wait till we see how the claim works out"

Anyway the tone of your reposted tweet, that you obviously agreed with, was a cover-up. There wouldn't be an investigation because the govt was paying for rebuild. Which is obviously idiotic and conspiracy led This confirms who was actually behind the "event"
Report GEORGE.B • March 28, 2024 10:56 AM GMT
Wrong again, it was the poster's opinion but in the context of Biden immediately saying that the govt would pay for reconstruction, and also people on this thread saying they thought it looked dodgy, so the tweeter is not alone in having suspicions.

Rico as it looks like they managed to restore the power, and put the engines in reverse. But the vessel was still moving forward. Reversing pushes the back in the opposite direction, but it was still moving forward due to momentum. As we all know, if you reverse a car and steer left the front will turn to the right. Only in this case it's on water so still moving forward whilst the engines were reversing.

Suspect looking at the video the "accident" could have been caused by fuel contamination which if true means somebody has messed up be it the bunkering facility, crew maintenance, fuels being put in the wrong holding tank etc.

At the time of the incident the port authority pilot would have been in charge of the vessel and all decisions would have been his call.

Ultimately there is always human input to every accident

Morning Reg i shall do my best

I hadn't seen the report you mention, just discussed with a couple colleagues.

Generally these our slow speed diesel engines that operate in a range of 1500 to 2500 rpm, as you would expect these engines are enormous bores of 1.5m+ and strokes of 3m+, there are various holding tanks with filters in line that deliver the fuel to the engines. During the combustion process grey and black water can also be injected into the cylinder which helps the temp of the burn which adds efficiency and helps with SOX and NOX emissions.

These engines are the life of the vessel no engines no power its really that simple, you will often see on the news vessels losing power from main engines and wallowing around frantically trying to restart or awaiting rescue/salvage.

For sure all fuel will have been sent for analysis and maintenance and engine room logs examined.

Having read the timeline can see the recommendation coming that all vessels have to have a tug escort until they pass the bridge in future.
Report formoftheace • March 30, 2024 12:25 PM GMT
Doubtful it was contaminated fuel as it would be detected……samples are taken from each fuel delivery one for the ship and one for the carrier……

Most ships have alarm systems that detect water in the fuel supply, water etc…plus the engine would cut out..

Container ship Mpg thread never got the airing it deserved on chit chat, but yea it's a big engine, massive consumption, tons of fuel per hour.
Fuel filters the size of wheelie bins imo, contamination would quickly be a problem, water separator systems will be very effiecent as condensation will be a big issue not to mention possible ingress.
Multiple fuel tanks and lines ect ect ect.

It's as sayed unlikely imo. Although without knowing the exact configuration of fuel system it's impossible to say but if that was problem it would be a lot of contamination and the fact the engines did restart its prob not the cause but as you say big accidents are usually a combination of events.

And as you say trev never underestimate human input side, we have an uncanny ability to be the pretty stupid at times.

Funny that exhaust  emmisions have been mentioned by you as ship pollution is a really hot subject at the mo,I wonder if that is a factor here, with engines running in extra clean mode when in port with exhaust gas regeneration ect being in play.
Only thing I can see off the scant info available is that the rules say two port pilots must be in charge of ship when navigating in/out of harbour, must be a lot of diff ships and their ystems to learn and in this instance it appears an apprentice was one of the two, not sure if thats unusual or not.

The ship in question is a Panamamax type it's width, length and displacement set by the restrictions of the canal, so must be a lot of compromises, once fully loaded with 5k containers prob not got much manoeuvrability at best of times.

Time will reveal all (hopefully) rip the dead, the bridge /ship  can be repaired.

Easter Wishes.
