Very old now and all those old northern jockeys sorting the race out long gone, a good read at the time.

I heard it was very good.

Great read!

Read it on release four decades back but felt there were dollops of embellishment added that were not needed considering the undoubted colourfully wild life he led.

£25 for 200 pages, many of which are padding according to verbotene liebe, sounds a bit steep. The odd thing is I recognise the cover but can't for the life of me remember anything about its content.

It's an interesting read. Still have my hardback copy.

Seem to recall there were fleeting mentions of an Irish gambler who left nothing to chance who liked to be referred to as "Kojak", who got rather more infamous in more recent years, real name Barney Curley. Lots of references to the northern jockeys ring where races were decided between themselves. Really i would say a story of a wasted talent whose life was ruined by bribes, birding, boozing and gambling with a few references to some of the great horses he rode such as Billy Bow, Even Keel, The Dikler and Moidore's Token to name a few.

Thanks, I think I will leave it for the moment.

I would be more interested in the horses than the skulduggery. It sounds as if the book may be slanted in the latter direction? To varying degrees, I am sure the dodgy stuff has always been part of the sport. These days it's so difficult to tell what is dodgy, and what is imcompetent.

You mean real, bona fide cheating used to go on in the past on an industrial scale - whodathunkit as it was all so perfect then..........
