Why are they carrying 9-7 and 9-2 in a maiden?

Should they not be carrying 9-0 and 8-9?

Or even less... 8-10 & 8-5

One of them isn't proper 2 till May and another two not 2 till April.
Strange

yes, considering they are probably ridden everyday with 11 or 12 stone on their back.

Just thought it was an odd weight. There must be a reason for it and thought someone on here might know it

It's been common practice in Ireland since 2021, and in tghe UK since about May 2022. I'd guess it's a follow-on from allowing jockeys an extra couple of pounds during Covid times.

I thought it started in Ireland to help Joseph and Donnacha out...though maybe not.

There was a move to drop weights a bit in juveniles a few years back but no longer by the look of it. In my view you should put the bottom weight on 8-7 which most riders can do and add on wfa, sex allowance etc. which would mean 8-12 for colts and 8-7 for fillies. In an all aged maiden again start on 8-7 for a 3yo filly and add on penalties etc. to that. More weight means more lame horses.
