I don't think he realised the winner was on the outside making up ground.  He seemed content he had the one in front covered.  I would say Mr Jardine will not be happy

Mulrennan teaming up with IJ...

He was going easily just over two out but in this grade they take time to make ground and surely a man of his experience knows that.

Mulrennan was in front of the eventual winner when he started to ask for an effort from well over a furlong out, and was still in front of the eventual winner when he used the whip for the first time a furlong out. He used up five of his six permitted strikes.

In short he asked his mount for a timely effort but on this occasion found one too good.

He never moved on the horse when he needed to irrespective of anything else.

The irony is the winner got a typical Mulrennan-style ride for Newcastle, held on to, steady headway to hit the front.

Mulrennan was asking for full effort when FH cruised past him, however, the eventual winner started to tie up in the closing stages, which enabled Mulrennan to close back up on him and allow the for the misconception that he'd given his mount too much to do.

Winner was in front in the final furlong whilst the runner up was in 4th place in the race that I watched. He gave the winner first run and as Kriskin said hadn't realised the winner making ground on the outer.

Let's see what the RP trip notes were:

Took keen hold, towards rear, going easily when switched left and headway over 1f out, led final 110yds, reduced lead towards finish, just held on

Dwelt start, midfield, smooth headway and disputing second 2f out, outpaced over 1f out, ran on well final 110yds, just failed

Spot on there, winner came from behind him when Mulrennan was asking for full effort, but ties up in the closing stages which allows Mulrennan to close up.

Winner cruised into it from virtually last place Blush

What this thread is really about though, is someone who wants to join the gang of the Mulrennan boo boys on here, so when he perceives what he thinks is a mistimed challenge, he wants to get straight in there and be the first to start the thread.

However, when the replay is analysed carefully, it's clear Mulrennan was asking for full effort before the eventual winner had even passed him.

You are entitled to your opinion as I am of mine. I watched the race back three times and my mind is not changed.
