its miles better these days

other than some winning distance betting & some of bigger races on standalone NH cards my interest has significantly waned

As a betting medium the Flat is the way to go. But performances like what Ballyburn just put up still gives me a buzz.
Report strontium March 13, 2024 3:34 PM GMT
Me too Whippin. For those who aren't enjoying it, go for a walk instead.

Better competition today

ballyburn beat a 66 to 1 stablemate, the horse he,d already beaent 6 lengths dodged him by running in the supreme,

The OP is right

The meeting now has been well and truly neutered by W. Mullins

In my betting shop everyone to a man says the same thing - they are sick of seeing 1-2 shots or a battalion of Mullins 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th string horses dominating almost every one of the Grade 1 races

So they are top horses, fair enough, but the competitiveness which was always what Cheltenham was about has all but vanished.

Aiden O'Brien killed the Derby

Mullins is killing Cheltenham

So you done your cobblers better luck next Year buddy.
Report FOYLESWAR March 14, 2024 7:31 PM GMT
its what you make it, luck plays a big part but  as acey says if yer done your jacksons its a uninspiring festival !
Report mitolo March 14, 2024 7:34 PM GMT
the flat a betting medium my bumhole

you need to be a medium to have a chance. mostly its a massive guess-up. at least with the jumps you have several years to look at, not one or two races

more importantly, i/r is very tricky

Its been much more exciting today, very enjoyable.

I've to agree with OP. This is the most underwhelming Cheltenham Festival I've ever encountered. I'm sure most will disagree, but I've yet to see a truly outstanding horse who'll be a champion next Cheltenham - not even Ballyburn. I understand Ballyburn was visually impressive, but what did he beat?

El Fabiola blotted his cv with his suspect jumping; Slade Hill is very unlikely a Champion Hurdle winner in-waiting; Constitution Hill, Shishkin and Sir Gino were absent.

I hope Galopin Des Champs can restore some gloss so lacking in this renewal. I hope the 3 key missing horses will do battle with the Irish winners in Punchestown esp Constitution Hill.
Report Ibrahima Sonko March 14, 2024 9:50 PM GMT
The first 2 days were a farce, short odds, no pace & small fields.

Today was like one the 3 day festival, hopefully friday can provide that again.
Report Shrewd_dude March 14, 2024 10:17 PM GMT
Agree.

Thursday always use to be the worst day of the 4 day festival and was the day to give the liver a rest before Gold cup day. With the small fields in the Champion hurdles and chase becoming a regular thing and the new races its turning in to the best day if you are looking for big competitive fields without loads of odds on shots.
Report 1st time poster March 15, 2024 8:19 AM GMT
exciting because the winner, 2nd  3rd and 4th  in ryanair should have been in todays gold cup,the rest were refugees from the chelt pre xmas 2 mil e 4 handicaps running in a grade 1,in which they were all tailed off yesterday, stayers a gaggle of teenagers plodding around for the umpteenth time beaten by a young horse not seen since before xmas
Report Brian March 15, 2024 8:35 AM GMT
I agree it has lost a bit of it's attraction but for me it still is the best four days racing in the NH calendar by a country mile.
Report Trident March 15, 2024 8:36 AM GMT
Yeah, can't remember a year when my Cheltenham roar is more of a meow. Jump racing in big trouble!
Report Trident March 15, 2024 8:39 AM GMT
It's still the best 4 days, yes. I'm not as excited about the horses lining up than previous years. It's not their fault. I'm thinking society and big business is diluting the atmosphere and people have less money in their pockets than ever. People are not standing for it any more. They are standing with heads high and saying enough is enough to corporate Greed.
