I’m looking forward to see how – Tonto Foley – jumps and runs today. Wasn’t on my radar prior to it’s chasing debut in a lowly class 5 hcap hurdle when an unconsidered 25/1 after a 7 month break.
His claiming jockey tried to settle him out the back but he took a hold coming to the first and jumped past 4 rivals into midfield with an exuberant leap. Very keen continually pulling for his head and put in some really good leaps taking length out of his rivals at many of the fences. Turning for home as the leaders grouped held his position well against the rails and moved up between the second and third approaching the third last. A repeat of his earlier jumps would have seen him move into second with momentum, but I’m, not sure if he took off early of tried to hurdle it but he smashed through the top half of the fence throwing his jockey forward and checking his momentum coming out of the fence back in 4th. Was ridden thereafter but the mistake and the break meant he the best he could do was stay on into third.
A novice with such exuberance is an exciting sight, if somewhat fraught with danger, but hopefully that run will have taken some of the fizz out of the gelding who is of interest after his chasing debut at it’s current price of about 10
