Former Chancellor calls for government to rethink 'ill-advised, blunt and damaging' affordability checks
https://www.racingpost.com/news/gambling-review/former-chancellor-calls-for-government-to-rethink-ill-advised-blunt-and-damaging-affordability-checks-asqp34A26NWG/

That is the Racing Post headline. I suppose it is true that Nadhim Zahawi was Chancellor of the Exchequer, but only for about five minutes while Boris imploded.

much more 'famous' for being the creepily named "vaccines minister", imo

Zahawi, who said he is unable to attend Monday's debate....

There ya go, evidently has something on that is much more important than defending people's right to spend their money as they choose, and the livelihoods of some of his constituents whose jobs could be at risk as a consequence of ACs.

By:

When: 26 Feb 24 16:47
The issue is not that punters want frictionless checks, the issue is that punters DO NOT WANT CHECKS FULL STOP, I wish they fooking stop pushing that bullsh1t line!!!!

If you did not have affordability checks, you would still have AML/KYC checks, not to mention mug punter checks.

I am watching it now from a link on the RP website. Oh Dear. Some of the speakers would not know what a horse looks like. The current speaker even wants lower limits before checks. Nobody has questioned WHO will do the check! Nobody with a grain of sense would give a bookmaker (or any other provider) details of their bank accounts.

Yeah, the petition is the worst thing that could have happened because the debate was always going to be a whitewash and rather than them acknowledge what brought them there i.e. "opposition" to the checks, it will actually just serve to be another means of pushing the current agenda from people who don't have a clue what they are talking about.

I can't even watch it because it would be too infuriating.

yeah just from the welsh woman we've seen a total lack of understanding that  people in control of their gambling turn over massive numbers compared to what they actually win or lose over a long time.

It is instructive to see how many MPs are willing to turn up and support racing and the point that the National Lottery takes much more money each week than Racing betting but is not likely to be included in the bill is a good one.

100% Howard - just desperate to hear someone make that very point. It needs a punter to stand up with a whiteboard and marker to spell out in simple language that these people can follow, how a succesful racing punter EXPECTS to lose in the short term.

Yes I've strongly made the point about the national lottery and scratch cards (ergo chav tax). They should also have mentioned the nonsense post code type lotteries, sports car lotteries and that omaze crap.

While they are having the debate someone should wheel in a tele and switch on ITV1 to the chase and ask them what they think about bingo sites sponsoring and by definition advertising whilst children are watching at tea-times.

They all seem happy that you can put on a massive  bet at the races with no checks.  Great for racecourse bookies if that's how it plays out but it is totally bonkers and would there be a legal challenge from online operators ?
By:

When: 26 Feb 24 17:35
Yeah the Bath MP was just bothered about her racecourse, at least Hancock said about game of chance should be separate.

In theory someone could only have £200 in their bank account but a £million in shares and trust funds and £50000 in cash. In that case surely the check is pointless. These MPs seem to believe that anyone doing the checks are totally honest and won't sell your bank details to crooks when that is highly likely to happen imo.

" 1%  of bookies customers provide 70% of bookies profits many of whom are problem gamblers "  the welsh woman said that and just been repeated.   Don't believe it but even if true most big losers will be wealthy people that can afford it.
