On Wednesday, December 7, 1960, Springbok (H. J. East) won the Kelso Handicap Chase by two lengths from Royal Robert (M.Batchelor) and Green Drill (G.Milburn). The only other runner was Festive Bough (B. Wilkinson). Springbok started the 10-11 favourite. This was Springbok’s fourth consecutive win and its second over the course. Mick Bachelor came to ride some work out for a small permit holder called McDonald who had a small place at Tadcaster a few miles from Wetherby. Mick was blown away by one the horses and thats how Fred Winter ended up with Pendil. Mick never let on how much the finders fee was.

I think Pendil won just once at Catterick for McDonald from a season over hurdles. He became quite a decent hurdler for Fred, before being much better still over fences because his jumping was so good.
