I live only 14 miles from Donny and go to most meetings there. Driving there today it looked a bit dicey but the fields wither side of the road I use were not too bad. But when I arrived in Donny at around 12.00 it looked good.
Snow had eased and once I had parked and gone inside the track looked OK. I bought something to eat but it was while I was consuming that the snow seemed to suddenly come down. By first race time it looked bad but the one thing that all tracks do which really annoys me when it comes to making late decisions about whether they can race or not, is let a whole crowd of officials, trainers and jockeys out to look at the track.
There is never a hope of reaching quick and easy decisions if so many people are having a say in things. The best businesses run with a board of three because like that it is easier to find a majority view! Having a coachload of people out on the track just makes it harder.
Although I think we have generally gone 'soft' in the UK today, I have to admit that I understand why it was called off. BUT, had that first race been a £20K one with only six runners or so, I bet the jocks would have taken their chances then!
However, the ironic thing about it all was that I drove the 14 miles home and by the time I got there it had stopped snowing and was raining. Two hours later, it had mostly turned to slush! Perhaps the track and the BHA could have shown a bit more foresight and given it an hour and then shortened the race intervals to 20 minutes (as has happened before) to make up the time?
Our racing is in too precarious a state for us to lose fixtures that could have gone ahead just 90 minutes later. Sadly, though, the fear of litigation is now at the forefront of everyone's minds, dressed up, of course, as 'everyone's safety is paramount'. Hypocritical nonsense!

They also omitted 2 fences at Huntingdon due to an "unsafe" road crossing. I have long suspected that Clerks are keen to find reasons to omit fences and hurdles as maintaining them is a significant cost. Everything in this country is about saving money regardless of the effect it has on the product. We need the Victorian mentality back. Use the best materials, build things that last. We are still getting the benefits of their skills at infrastructure design and building. Of course they also punished anyone who damaged and vandalised buildings which we have stopped doing.
