11/12/1971 Charles Vickery Memorial Handicap Chase £930.70 to the winner
Trained by T Gillam for Mrs L Brotherton Fortune Bay II went off 1/1, but unseated riderat the 14th. Great Noise was a useful chaser who ran in the Grand National, but looked as if he needed this run. Red Rum's only other win that year was also over the same course and distance on 1 January. He confirmed the form with Great Noise who was sent off 4/7. |

thanks for posting anyone got date / race details h'cap or conditions race
|
|

thanks DD

Thanks for the extra detail.
It's a funny old game, who would have thought that a jockey-horse combo winning round Catterick, would six years later combine again to be victorious in one of (if not the) greatest sporting achievements of all time. |

did many racing fans own colour tv's in those days ? useful for racing ( and snooker ! ) I remember the quality of the images was not great so we didn't get one until '75.

Who's colours were they?
|
|
By:
The commentator called Red Rum the winner a fair way out with the runner-up closing.
|
|
By:
Colours are those of Lurline Brotherton, and were carried by Freebooter to win the Grand National in 1950.
The colours are still in use, by her grandson Guy Middleton. Shewearsthewellies runs in them. |

Red Rum's win wouldn't have got much attention that day, as it was Massey-Ferguson day at Cheltenham, and Stan Mellor came into it on 999 winners (no jumps jockey had ever ridden 1000 at that time). He had 5 good rides at Cheltenham, but missed out. In the race after the big one, his mount Charlie Potheen had the race at his mercy when running out at the 2nd last. In the last race, his mount fell at the last hurdle when challenging. Also, Tom Dreaper announced his retirement that weekend.

Red Rum was aged 6 when he won that race. It was the first NH winner for trainer Anthony Gillam a farmer who'd built training facilities on the land he bought from his wife's grandfather.
Rummy carried 10st 6lb and was ridden by Tommy Stack. Race was over 3m and the prize money was £1k |
|
By:
It was Massey Furguson Gold Cup at chelters that same day. Prize money £5k
Crisp carried top weight [12st 7lb] Tom Dreaper's Leap Frog, his last ever runner at Cheltenham, narrowly beat The Dikler by a mere head. Third place went to Titus Oates, whilst Gay Trip, the 1970 Grand National winner, was fourth. |

When Catterick used to be part of the old ITV 7 some good horses ran there.

Didnt Rummy dead heat in his first race, a 5 furlong race ridden by L.Piggott ?
|
|
By:
He dead-heated in a 5f race at Aintree on GN day 1967.
He was ridden by Paul Cook. He won first time out the following year winning a seller at doncaster, ridden by Geoff Lewis. *Lester was the last man to ride Rummy on the flat. They were beaten by Alan's pet in teh Earl of Sefton H'cap on GN day 1968. The next man to ride Rummy was Josh Gifford in a hurdle race at Cheltenham. some great names there from the past. |

Grand Nationals aside i always think of the Ladbroke Trophy of 1973 when Red Rum is mentioned , touched off by Red Candle in a great finish...

Twas the Hennessy gold cup?
|
|
By:
Red Candle was trained by ricky vallance and ridden by Jimmy fox.
David Elsworth was assistant trainer to vallnce. |
|
By:
In that same race Moonlight Escapade was declared a non-runner
The trainer Charles Vernin Miller was fined 20 quid for showing disregard of the interests of racegoers the rest is history ![]() |

By:
Ginger bought him and on arrival discovered he had a soft tissue injury to his right fore. Chitting himself he worked him in the sea for a week and, whatever it was, it mysteriously cleared up. And to quote an earlier phrase - the rest is history.
Still can't forget the SPOTY show of '78? Rummy in the studio, quiet as a lamb, probably loving all the attention, suddenly heard Tommy Stack's voice over the two-way link up and his ears pricked, his head cocked, looking around for his erstwhile racing colleague. It was a touching moment. Or the amazing affection for him from the crowds at Aintree in '78 as he paraded before the race - he;d been withdrawn injured and was allowed to parade half an hour before those who ran so we could all see him. |

Yes sorry mate it was stupid of me calling it the Coral or Ladbroke cup as it is now , should have said Hennessey as we'll all remember it as that. |
|
By:
I still call it The Hennessy .
I still call the first big chase at Cheltenham in November The Mackesson . I still call the 3 mile novice at Chelt ,The Sun Alliance ![]() |
|
By:
Same here dambuster. And I believe that in the race headings most of these old, iconic names are recognised and mentioned. "Known as" etc. I think they still do that, certainly hope so.
|

By:
We all do dambuster!

By:
Bobby Renton had already won a National with Freebooter in 1950
|
|
By:
The fame of Red Rum is unsurpassed by any other nag on this windswept island, Dessie may be 2nd. That Racing Post poll was a complete joke
|
|
By:
Renton trained in Ripon by all accounts.
Went to ireland to buy Freebooter and paid £3K for it. The owner told Renton, "this horse will win the Grand National one day" |

Great thread , remember backing him in a double with Red Alligator 2 bob E/W double and visiting my Father in hospital in London and he said to me Son you'll be betting for life now , he was right...

By:
Asked a neighbour the other week what made him start punting horses , he said he was putting a National bet on for the wife & kids and the queue was that long he backed a Greyhound at Hackney because they had a separate till so backed his fav number 5 to help kill some time , said he's barely gone a day without a bet since.
