THE BETUK. IT'S WHERE THE UK BETS HANDICAP STAKES (CLASS 3)

An enquiry was held to consider the placings in this race after interference approximately a furlong after the start involving the winner, JUST A SPARK, ridden by Gina Mangan, INTERVENTION, placed second, ridden by Alistair Rawlinson and ROUSING ENCORE (IRE), placed fourth, ridden by Billy Garritty. ROUSING ENCORE (IRE)’s placing was not considered as it was comfortably beaten by 4½ lengths. After hearing evidence from all three riders and viewing recordings of the incident, it was established that approximately 5 furlongs out JUST A SPARK moved left-handed into the racing line of INTERVENTION, causing INTERVENTION to be hampered when left short of racing room, resulting in that gelding taking a strong hold of Rawlinson when caught on the heels of JUST A SPARK and also caused ROUSING ENCORE (IRE) to be checked and lose its rightful running. Taking into account that this incident occurred in the very early stages of a 6 furlong race and INTERVENTION quickly recovered to be positioned prominently and racing within half a length of JUST A SPARK throughout the final 4 furlongs before losing out by a short head after a protracted battle all the way down the home straight with the winner, the Stewards were unable to be satisfied that but for the interference INTERVENTION, which was beaten by a short head margin, would have finished in front of JUST A SPARK and ordered that the placings remain unaltered. Mangan was suspended for 4 days for careless riding after allowing JUST A SPARK to drift left-handed into the path of INTERVENTION when insufficiently clear thereby causing interference to that runner and also ROUSING ENCORE (IRE) on its inside.
