The race caller is central to the enjoyment. I know that some on here have advocated watching without commentary but I just find it too difficult doing that live and I'll even have it on when I know that I'll be cringing. Fine for replays and note taking later, but I know for sure that I wouldn't be a horseracing fan had it not been for the indelible association of PO'Ss voice with the thrill of watching a live race. Which is why I get exercised now in my old age, at some the baffling decisions to employ more than a few that have voices, intonation and syntax that could make paint peel. Mark Slater has never been one of them. One of the better ones for sure.

Without a doubt one of the best callers...no ego, no overexcitement, no shouting, no overused cliches, no pre-rehearsed sickly puns
![]() ( i'm looking at you Machin - fookin terrible for a grown man ) no lipsmacking ....just calls a race in a clear concise manner.Well done Mark and enjoy your retirement. |

As it's been planned for so long, you would have thought they could have named the final race after him. 40 years, and still walking the paddock making notes before the race.

always been a fan of Mark...
kept it simple... no ego whatsoever... think i heard him say he wanted to spend more time with his grandchildren so hopefully he enjoys himself with all that. |
