A terrible commentary aside from this in general. Can't understand how a commentator is just relying on the TV to commentate, which Harris clearly was. Had to wait until a horse came into view on the far side on the screen before he knew where it was. Tea Clipper didn't throw it away as he suggested as he was only looking at the screen. James King has clearly eased going to the last which has cost it.

Must have ran into some strong headwinds as he thought he'd sail home.

I know all the 'modern' commentators commentate from the screen, but I'm sure most still have binoculars for emergencies. Looked and sounded like Harris was commentating from the shed in his garden.

Report jackdaw • January 22, 2024 5:05 PM GMT
Most of them are commentating from the monitor which is why they are surprised when the runners approach a dolled off fence/hurdle.They often miss a runner that has come down towards the rear of the field.
Report MJK • January 22, 2024 5:14 PM GMT
In reality there's no actual need for them to be on track these days
Report Cider • January 22, 2024 5:21 PM GMT
going out on a limb here, I'm guessing you don't need bins to see the last fence from the top of the stand.

Never been to Warwick but I wouldn't think so. Makes it even worse.
Report 1st time poster • January 22, 2024 5:58 PM GMT
although big drop in class the fav never been a strong stayer at 4 miles always had him mbest at 2m 4 to 2m 6,and in front a longtime, how ever race was run you,d fancy the winner if anywhere near at the last, clipper needed something to stay  with it for a lot longer,if their going hunting for a big festival winner, aintree foxhunters his race
Report Cider • January 22, 2024 6:10 PM GMT
Touch of complacency perhaps in my view, final race of the day and the long odds on jolly a long way clear going into the last with the jockey only nudging away. None of us are infallible.
Report brandyontherocks • January 22, 2024 9:02 PM GMT
The poor horse has never stayed the 3 miles, yet his connections are the only ones not to have realised.
Report Rico-Dangleflaps • January 22, 2024 9:06 PM GMT
walofs..tea clippers ran plenty good races over 3m...2st in hand of winner and 8L clear..dogged it imo.
Report swiftynifty • January 22, 2024 9:15 PM GMT
if he doesn't stay 3m then that's my form book done with, it's lying to me.
Report Regbutler • January 22, 2024 9:20 PM GMT
3 x 2nd place in a row never looks good

To my mind, the horse easily went 10 lengths clear on the turn in, but the jockey then stopped asking for maximum effort from 2 out and maybe horse thought that was it for the day?
Report swiftynifty • January 22, 2024 9:25 PM GMT
Reg, something's not right, he had 36lb in hand of the winner at the weights, he should've been long gone by then.
Report Rico-Dangleflaps • January 22, 2024 9:27 PM GMT
wasnt 10L clear imo and never eased up..prob just got tired in the ground and a dour stayer outstayed it.
Report Regbutler • January 22, 2024 9:30 PM GMT
Swifty, I agree
Unfortunately, either due to the camera angle or something else, he seemed to be 10 lengths clear, then in a split second the other horse was jumping the last only 2 lengths down and with momentum
Report swiftynifty • January 22, 2024 9:31 PM GMT
I was shocked to see him in a Hunter, it usually sounds alarm bells, he's only 9 and ran a blinder at Cheltenham only 10 months ago. Maybe tired but he had race fitness, he's never won as many as he should've done.
Report Regbutler • January 22, 2024 9:32 PM GMT
OK Wazza, I'll see if I can find a replay and have another look
Report brandyontherocks • January 22, 2024 9:33 PM GMT
Correct, swift.
He should have won plenty more, but connections insist on running him over a trip he clearly does not get.
Report swiftynifty • January 22, 2024 9:33 PM GMT
only people at the track or the droners will know the gap, RTV viewers shafted!
Report Rico-Dangleflaps • January 22, 2024 9:35 PM GMT
was no drone.
Report swiftynifty • January 22, 2024 9:35 PM GMT
brandy, he stays 3miles, it's in the book, but i don't disagree I've always liked the idea of running him over shorter, it's 75 seconds less running 'if' he has issues of some kind.
Report swiftynifty • January 22, 2024 9:36 PM GMT
anyway, did KOI back him or not, we need to know?!
Report Rico-Dangleflaps • January 22, 2024 9:39 PM GMT
yes..max steaks ... fillet his satchel
Report swiftynifty • January 22, 2024 9:43 PM GMT
KOI said, pick the bones out of that
Report Regbutler • January 22, 2024 9:44 PM GMT
Wazza, just watched it again
Commentator actually says he's 10 lengths ahead about 50 yards before the 2nd last  and to me it looked about that
Horse in solo camera approaching the last, so, as I said, all of a sudden the eventual winner is almost upsides
Report Rico-Dangleflaps • January 22, 2024 9:44 PM GMT
strange result..should never had got caught..but,dus anything suprise.
Report Rico-Dangleflaps • January 22, 2024 9:47 PM GMT
mebbe 6-8L clear..and aye..zoomed in on leader looked bar a fall and winner is upsides wen camera panned out.
Report Regbutler • January 22, 2024 10:02 PM GMT
Wazza, does this drone thingy give you more than 1 angle, I suppose I mean is there more than 1 drone and can you see all the different angles at once? Basically, how do the drone pics compare to usual TV angles etc?
Report Rico-Dangleflaps • January 22, 2024 10:23 PM GMT
drone pics are side on last 3f..so you can all forward or backward momentum..just a world apart from conventional tv pics looking at a 30 degree angle.
Report Regbutler • January 22, 2024 10:39 PM GMT
Cheers Wazza
Report breadnbutter • January 23, 2024 8:41 AM GMT
Why are the racing picture  companies not employing drones?

It's more effiecent ,better images, more accurate, cheaper , less of a carbon footprint, safer, ect ect. Makes you wonder, and why are the punters not asking for them, why are the racing media not asking for them?

Mind boggling why they are not being used, many sports have been using them for a few years now.

The cost side alone of humping all the camera vehicles about must be pretty heavy.
Let's face it most of the current camera angles are down to vehicle access not best possible view.
Report swiftynifty • January 23, 2024 11:13 AM GMT
If weather prevents the drones going up, not exactly good for viewers and turn over. But def a combo of both.
Report formoftheace • January 23, 2024 11:24 AM GMT
Drones would be good target practice for the clay pigeon clubs…..

What sort of prices/amounts got done on this one, as the comm gave his definite result a bit early?
Report swiftynifty • January 23, 2024 1:50 PM GMT
1.02, 300+ the winner for a few quid.
Report stu • January 23, 2024 3:10 PM GMT
cheers, maybe could have been worse though still painful if you laid 300
