He must have been quite young, when put on the plane to get Shergar back.
Quite the responsibility |

I saw him at Ayr on Scottish National day 2003 -he gave the impression that he was incredibly happy to be Derek Thompson.

We'll leave that to the judge ![]() |

Many years ago a chocolate questioned Mr Dereks reliability in court.
You should treat this evidence with caution," he told the jury. "Only after careful consideration must you act on it, when you are satisfied of its truth and accuracy and that it amounts to a confession. |

The judge wasn't too enamoured with Thommo?

sorry wrong way round. Thommo beating Prince Charles at Plumpton 1979 I think. Mad Hatters Stakes charity race. Classified was the winner. Long Wharf the 2nd.I owned a share in Classified. I was in Dubai at the time. I only found out Classified had run, and won, by telex, the day after it ran. 33/1. Not a penny on. Classified won a season or so later at 33/1 first time out (I think) and I was told not to back it. I saw Steve Smith Eccles years later and he told me the whole stable was on, including his dad, but not me. Henderson trained it. Classified was placed twice in the GN I think. A great horse (If thommo won it must have been). Wish I had one as good now.

Derek Thompson 0901 563 8237 Calls cost 60p per minute
quite lucrative back then, even now. |

Quite. Leif, I wasn't praising him. I dislike the man. Just an interesting contribution I thought. But maybe not.

Classified was the 14/1 outsider of the pack. ChArlie boy was on the 13/8 FAV. Third by five lengths was the 7-4 second favourite Glamour Show, by former top show-jumper Althea Olfford.

Tommo has suddenly become more decisive when calling close finishes. New glasses perhaps? Close-up view on the commentary box monitor?

Thanks Leif. Memory fades and exaggerates. The race featured on the front page of The Times as I recall (we got the paper in Jebel Dhanna about 3 days later!). I remember going to Henderson's yard when I had the share and seeing Zongalero. NH said he was sure to win the GN. Got beat by Rubstic. Closest he has come I think.
|
|
By:
Zongalero was the subjesct of some fashion of a pre-race health scare and was replaced as jolly by Rubstic who duly won.
The Tsarevich finished 2nd to Maori Venture in 1987 ridden by John White [probably the guy that won the 1993 GN that never was] |
|
By:
Well done leif. Thanks. Zongalero was the size of a house compared to Classified. Great days for me then. I thought it was a doddle owning shares!

|
By:
Problem Thommo had in court was that its crunch time and they want a definitive yes or no and as we know this particular passenger on the gravy train prefers to remain on the fence with splinters firmly embedded. Firmly!
