Better horse, race fitness shouldnt be a problem as he has won first time up after breaks of 773, 223 and 222 days in the past. Market will tell us more on the day.

I'm with 'acey' on this. L'Homme Presse has had only two races in 2022, and missed an entire 2023.

Allaho on sunday is another that is worth opposing, I believe. Any double possible?
Report strontium • January 20, 2024 1:42 PM GMT
LHP has won first time out three times (every season he's run in GB).
Report brandyontherocks • January 20, 2024 6:10 PM GMT
Not sure if you can do a double lay!!!

Maybe see if one of the bet-builders offer that?

If not, lay them singularly
Report The Dragon • January 20, 2024 6:31 PM GMT

Report brandyontherocks • January 20, 2024 6:50 PM GMT
Of course you can't.

It is, true.

But who would do that?
Report layingisthewayforward • January 20, 2024 8:26 PM GMT
If you're against 2 short priced favourites it's hardly the most ridiculous bet in the world , is it ?
Report brandyontherocks • January 20, 2024 8:53 PM GMT
You would risk your winnings and stake on the 2nd bet?
Report DonegalPrince • January 20, 2024 9:15 PM GMT
acey, with due respect, Protektorat's "Gold Cup" was Haydock. Skelton said this time and time again before the race. He was clear that he was being set up for that race knowing it was unlikely he would win at Kempton or Cheltenham. It may be that you are correct and L'HdP is not good enough or not ready (very unlikely given his first time out record) but it is surely wrong to say that , in some way or other, this is the Gold Cup for Protektorat. He's had that and got battered. And he gives 4lb. Good luck with your punt. I shan't be playing too heavily but I would definitely not be backing the Skelton horse.

That really was an eyecatching run last time by Protektorat Sunday stroll round and finish more or less on the snaff.Wink
Report acey deucy • January 20, 2024 10:26 PM GMT
I mean i am a Fan of L'homme Presse but just not Tomorrow.
Report DonegalPrince • January 20, 2024 10:38 PM GMT
acey, I love punters who are fans of horses. I doubt if I would describe 3rd in a middling handicap behind a novice who was battered last week as "eyecatching" but I admire your determined approach. We all have these horses. I followed See More Business (my former user name) for ever. he won more races than P mind you! I wish you the best tomorrow. I shall be playing small on L'HdP but we shall see. Good luck chap.
Report duffy • January 20, 2024 10:50 PM GMT
I'm not sure why they ran Protektorat in the handicap last time, a mere 3 weeks after the Betfair Chase, it certainly wouldn't have been the plan, it was almost as if they were so disappointed and at a complete loss they were desperate to see him run again just to see if the Haydock run was real or not. I don't know what it told us, giving weight to vastly inferior horses in what ended up being slowly run, I suppose the horse had a nicer experience and as acey says he wasn't given a particularly hard time.

They'll be wanting to find out one or two things from LP tomorrow, with a truncated prep I think he'll be 100% ready to rock and they will be eager to see him up against a decent yardstick with the Gold Cup in mind. In a perfect world he'll lead all the way and pound the rest into submission.
Report GoBallistic • January 20, 2024 11:29 PM GMT
Protektorat was ridden conservatively last time to say the least (a confidence builder) but that's probably why he ran well. I don't think he has a lot more up his sleeve and I don't think he beats the fav off levels let alone giving him weight
Report acey deucy • January 21, 2024 7:31 AM GMT
Even the Racing Post described Protektorat's last run as eyecatching Donegal that is not just me....Anyway should be a fun Race to watch good luck.
Report sageform • January 21, 2024 8:15 AM GMT
Not a race I would want to bet in and not just a 2 horse race but with the yard back in form I would side with Protektorat to beat a horse with 391 days off.
Report impossible123 • January 21, 2024 11:27 AM GMT
But for the 4lbs concession to L'Homme Presse (LHP) I'd go all in. As it is only a treble, with only LHP to beat; Allaho has an easier task without Envoi Allen.
Report acey deucy • January 21, 2024 11:33 AM GMT
Certainly not a Race to go all In Imp...Best Clash we have had for a couple of Weeks that is why i thought it was worth highlighting.Grin
Report impossible123 • January 21, 2024 11:44 AM GMT
'acey', a good handicapper vs a promising but fragile horse that's missed 2023. Only a small acca with a shortie footie, Cheltenham and Newmarket.
Report strontium • January 21, 2024 1:28 PM GMT
Bit harsh to call Protektorat a "handicapper". On that basis, any horse that doesn't win the Gold Cup is a handicapper. How would you define a proper Grade 1 horse?
Report acey deucy • January 21, 2024 1:38 PM GMT
Skelton still thinks there is a Grade 1 in him.
Report Storm Alert • January 21, 2024 1:39 PM GMT
It's slightly irritating that I can't glean any info about L'Homme Presse wellbeing; bloody stable is impossible to gauge. Trip and ground perfect though and his been entered in enough races to make me believe he might be ready. Surely anywhere near his best will beat this lot including Protektorat trying to give him 4lbs.
Report acey deucy • January 21, 2024 1:49 PM GMT
And not been a penny for him.
Report Storm Alert • January 21, 2024 2:01 PM GMT
I think thats probably as a result of the early price being very tight. 10/11 is more realistic, given the stable and mia for 13 months. Apologies for aftertiming but Allaho 6/5 with Bet365 (without Envoy Allen) was a much better bet for those that could get one.
Report impossible123 • January 21, 2024 2:59 PM GMT
Protektorat for budget airline race at Cheltenham. Here's 40 here for the race. Allaho is 3.7; he beat a marathon horse at Thurles.

Report Storm Alert • January 21, 2024 3:12 PM GMT
Might have been close and the 4lb of course, but surely LP has a lot of improvement to come, it took him half the race to get any sort of rhythm going.

Report sageform • January 21, 2024 3:22 PM GMT
i take that point Storm Alert. L'Homme Presse should improve enough to beat Protektorat again at levels over that trip but Protektorat was a well beaten fifth of 6 finishers in the 2023 Gold Cup! It is also true that Skelton has been in blinding form recently while Venetia was 0 from 12!

LHP will improve for fitness, jumping and trip. Still not likely to get close to GDC though, but it would be nice if something makes a race of it. Won cosily today, whatever pounds for lengths may say.

Report brandyontherocks • January 21, 2024 8:00 PM GMT
Really do not see how anyone can think the 4lb made the difference between victory and defeat.

Hoping to see GDC put in another monster performance at the DRF to jeopardise his Gold Cup claims.

Report strontium • January 22, 2024 11:51 AM GMT
Really? Sure, if GDC runs like he did last time out, nothing will get near him. But if he runs like he did the two races before that, he'll get beaten by something.
Report LoyalHoncho • January 22, 2024 2:45 PM GMT
Yes, really.  Otherwise I wouldn;t have said so.
Report duffy • January 22, 2024 2:57 PM GMT
Agree Stront, plenty are focussing on GDC's last run, but if we look at the wider picture since last March then the conclusion we must come to is that he has a vulnerability as well of any brilliance he may show and as impressive as he was last time the truth is that he was the only one to run any kind of race and the horse that's beaten him twice since last March wasn't even in the field.

If you were really wanting to pour cold water on it you could say that Fastorslow was nothing more than a glorified handicapper himself who beat GDC twice whilst about 2 stone wrong at the weights. Even with what appears the paucity of opposition nigh on even money about the favourite is pushing itPlain
Report LoyalHoncho • January 22, 2024 3:19 PM GMT
Surely the price is irrelevant in this discussion.  L'Homme Presse ran a stinker two back and two back from that one too.
Does that make him a "dodgepot" as well?

Two back, LHP won a handicap at Newcastle off 164. He was poor the time before that (Aintree), which was his only bad run since he went chasing.

Report impossible123 • January 22, 2024 7:03 PM GMT
I understand Gerri was disappointing last time nevertheless the price of LHP is shorter than his. Is it justified? LHP only beat Protektorat receiving 4lbs.
Report CagliariG • January 22, 2024 7:06 PM GMT
Cant argue with that honcho, sound like if his auntie had testicles scenario, a bit like Rico on Stewards Inq and might get disqualified but not a gimme but WD Rico whatever the result to himself.

One thing for sure is that Protektorat will not beat LP if they meet again unless it was at 2 miles which obviously will never happen, the longer the trip the further LP would beat him.
Report strontium • January 22, 2024 7:56 PM GMT
Sorry, where's the "pivot"? You said "L'Homme Presse ran a stinker two back and two back from that one too". I just pointed out that is factually incorrect - he's only run one bad chase in his career, the race at Aintree.
