Iberico Lord Betfair Hurdle (Newbury, February 10) 1pt win at 12-1 generally
Aurigny Mill Betfair Hurdle (Newbury, February 10) 1pt win at 33-1 generally
The Betfair Hurdle hasn't been a great race for punters for the most part with the average winning price in the last ten years over 16-1.
Maybe we've all got too obsessed with runners trained by Nicky Henderson and Willie Mullins in recent years because they've had 26 darts between them and not hit the bullseye.
This year, the two trainers have just shy of 25 per cent of the entrants and Henderson has obvious chances with Ascot scorer Luccia, Greatwood Hurdle winner Iberico Lord and Impose Toi, who probably should have beaten Luccia at Ascot.
Those races are the strongest two-mile hurdles run this season and Henderson has dominated them, so he might easily break his losing run in the Betfair Hurdle. If the ground was testing, I could easily see Iberico Lord bouncing back to form as the time and form of his Cheltenham win suggests he's still a well-handicapped horse.
He was very weak in the market at Ascot last time when the ground would have been much too quick and he also didn't seem totally in love with the track. Basically, he's much better than he showed that day and there is a chance he could have bounced on the back of that seriously good effort at Cheltenham. If he's in the same form as in the Greatwood, the 12-1 is an extremely big price.
Altobelli was in front of Iberico Lord at Ascot and would have to be on the shortlist on soft ground, while Impose Toi probably didn't stay the Lanzarote trip last Saturday and undoubtedly has a race like this in him. However, if there is one horse who could be thrown in it might be the Ben Pauling-trained novice Tellherthename.
Pauling has made it pretty clear how highly he rates this horse and bar one blip at Aintree on heavy ground, he has lived up to his trainer's opinion of him. Last time at Huntingdon, he skipped clear in the style of a top novice and hit the line really hard. I expect he's a lot better than his mark and his trainer will be seriously tempted to run. However, he will need the ground to be decent, so it might be best to wait until nearer the time before backing him.
Gary Moore has the best recent record in the race and looks to have two with good chances in Hansard and Spirit D'Aunou, who have both won valuable two-mile hurdles already this season. Hansard didn't get the clearest of runs in Luccia's race at Ascot and still looks feasibly handicapped, while Spirit D'Aunou is relatively unexposed and looked good at Sandown last time.
Spirit D'Aunou was tempting at 20-1 but I'm pretty sure if Aurigny Mill was trained by a big-name stable, he would be half his price of 33-1. Impressive at Wincanton at the start of last month, Aurigny Mill took off in a strongly-run race at Kempton over Christmas and came home alone with the minimum of fuss. That Kempton race invariably throws up a horse capable of competing in the better two-time handicap hurdles and Aurigny Mill seems to be massively on the upgrade for trainer Victor Dartnall.
What he needs is a strong pace to run at, so this race will suit him perfectly, and he won't mind what the ground is as he won on heavy at Wincanton and good to soft at Kempton.
Of the rest, Brentford Hope likes Newbury and is being aimed at the race, so is on the shortlist, while I still think the Mullins-trained Onlyamatteroftime is well handicapped and will win a big one before the season is out.
