How did racing ever survive with no Sunday racing or AW?
Report sparrow January 3, 2024 11:47 AM GMT
If people don't care for particular meetings then just ignore them as I frequently do. As always many on here only interested in their own personal preferences with no regard for what others might prefer.
Report howard January 3, 2024 11:58 AM GMT
maybe racing survived in the past because there was no internet no smartphones little racing on telly / nearly no football on the telly. Times have changed. Racing has to be on tv when people want to watch. Let's see if they do.
Report sageform January 3, 2024 4:07 PM GMT
It does amaze me how many people in racing including jockeys, trainers and punters see more race meetings as a threat because they assume that they have to be ready to compete in or bet on every race. Jockeys are free agents so they can take a couple of weeks off so long as they give notice to anyone who retains them. Trainers can make it clear to owners that they don't run horses on Mondays or Sundays or on the all weather or any other reason and the owner then decides how to react. Even if a trainer does want to race 364 days a year, he has to ensure that staff have regular days off like any other business and it is only the biggest ones who have runners every day. I was a livestock farmer so animals needed feeding 365 days a year but including me there were 4 people who rotated weekends and it worked fine. Punters can specialise in certain types of race or only bet on flat or NH etc. Some people just enjoy watching horses race and don't bet at all. I probably won't watch Sunday evening racing but I don't mind other people doing so.

I'm talking from a sport perspective rather than a betting one.
Over-saturation imo.

Report sageform January 3, 2024 4:21 PM GMT
It is not over saturation if you like to attend your local track that only races 16 days a year or you own a 120 rated 3 mile chaser for whom there is only one suitable race each week and that might be 300 miles away. There are far too many low grade races but that is where the demand is.
Report Wesdag January 3, 2024 4:46 PM GMT
16 days is plenty - should half that. Devil
Report sparrow January 3, 2024 4:59 PM GMT
wesdag a recipe for the end of the industry as we know it.
Report Barton Bank January 3, 2024 5:09 PM GMT
The reason for the good number of entries is unlikely because owners are desperate to run their horses on a Sunday evening. Quite simply, the prize money is better than most AW races of the same grade.
Report jimnast January 3, 2024 6:49 PM GMT
My first thoughts when winter Sunday night racing was included in the fixture list was who on earth would go,now if both the card and the weather is reasonable I will go to wollybags Sunday night ,those who don’t fancy it I’m sure will find other things to do.
Report Billy Liddell January 3, 2024 7:23 PM GMT
Jimnast, we loved going to Wolves on a Saturday night as a family, thirty of us went for my sisters 60th including my Dad and we all stayed in the hotel, lovely restaurant and decent group, band after racing. On Sunday's we couldn't do that even though I could go with my wife and a few others. Nice crowd at Wolverhampton as well..
Report sageform January 3, 2024 7:55 PM GMT
The customer is always right so if people go and punters bet they will continue with Sunday night racing. If they don't they won't. I can see a Sunday evening in summer but under lights? Can't see it.
Report sparrow January 3, 2024 8:00 PM GMT
I don't think they would be too bothered whether people attend the track or not so long as the bets came off course.
Report sageform January 3, 2024 8:19 PM GMT
Don't forget that owners have a say in where their horse runs and if they don't want to attend on Sunday night the horses won't be entered. The big syndicates will run though.
Report jimnast January 4, 2024 1:19 PM GMT

Report howard January 4, 2024 1:48 PM GMT

Report sageform January 4, 2024 7:35 PM GMT
Does a racecourse get a percentage of the bets placed on races at their meeting or is the money pooled over the whole year? I didn't think that a course benefitted directly from increased turnover on a specific meeting. That is the big failure of our system. In the US, the course owns the pool betting on their course so they directly benefit from raising turnover so can offer better facilities and cheaper entry. Chester have gone down that route so it is possible here.

I think it's an interesting experiment. I can't recall Sunday night horse racing taking place anywhere

in the World. Maybe it has but this bit of thinking outside the box could pay off. Those who criticize

before the event should wait and see the outcome first. Ave 11 entered per race suggests there is

support from owners and trainers.

Stupid idea for me. Who really wants to come back from a meeting at 9pm+ on a Sunday when there's school/work the next morning. Friday night, all day Saturday, all day Sunday (with an early start if encouraging families) far better options for your weekend entertainment. This is purely bookmakers running the show. If degenerates need a bet, back a dog. Or have a night off and watch the Antigues Roadshow.

I watch Horse Racing most days but will not watch this on a Sunday evening, there is enough racing during the weekdays and evenings why do they need this, most people have to work next day so that will put attendances down, and also there is only so much money people can bet during the week. This is not going to get the big punters betting so how is it going to improve any betting turnover.
