The minefield of Antepost.

Elliot told Garry O'Brien: "I'll make my mind up whether to send him or not". Asked what would influence his decision, Elliot smiled and said, "whatever side of the bed I got out".

Is that how a trainer treat antepost punters of the key race over x'mas in England? It might be tongue-in-cheek but too flippant to be respectful to punters parting with their hard-earned cash nevertheless.

Hold your bets on Gerri. It's prudent for your pocket.

Anyone backing ante post these days is s total mug. Most times you get better odds on the day and a guaranteed run. Crookies killed this many years ago.

I seriously dislike Elliott. However, Allaho now being a likely runner does change the complexion of the race, and Elliott may well be reacting to that. It's reasonable to think Geri might beat Bravemansgame at Kempton in their current form. But if Allaho's at anything like his best, that's a different bag of cheese.

That's a big enough "if" though, I thought that there was enough encouragement from his first run back for those that would have previously been frightened of him.

Duffy - If the race weren't at Kempton, I'd agree with you. But considering just that head to head, Kempton will very much play to Allaho's strengths and Geri's weaknesses. I'd expect Geri to win if they met over 3 m at Sandown or Cheltenham, and I'd be a layer of Allaho for the Ryanair. But at Kempton, it all changes.

If Allaho is 6/4 or lesser I'd be a layer. I think his past reputation is shouldering his present price; track absence tells me otherwise.

strontium,

I agree, I don't like Gerri's jumping, he lands flat footed and has to be ridden away from his fences too often, but Elliott hasn't been outwardly worried about that, I was meaning that beng scared of Allaho shouldn't be preventing anyone from running, it looks wide open, I'm surprised there aren't many more having a go at it.

Yes, it does look an open race, with at least one big question mark against all the favourites. I do agree with you about Allaho in general - I suspect he might have peaked in the 2021 Ryanair, and his comeback race told us very little. There could be some value in the market somewhere. But I do think that if Allaho is anywhere near his best, he'll win, because of the combination of his ability and Kempton suiting him very well.

I believe BMG was undercooked 1st time, and 2nd race was too soon post 1st and an afterthought. The King George is his Gold Cup I think.

Listening to trainers re future targets for ante post betting is the quick route to poor house. The 3 biggest trainers in the game
Elliot
Mullins
Henderson

have plenty of form between them.

I admire Pumpkin greatly as a trainer of steeplechasers. But no one can say he talks objectively about his top horses. He seems to take any criticism of their performance or ability as personal criticism of himself. That's fine for him as a "sportsman", but it means that anything he says about these horses is useless to the public.

Cash is king and park any trainer's musing in the car park. This is the best way forward.

The King George market has really been shaken up by the weekend’s results and we can report some serious money for Gerri Colombe with his odds tumbling from 10-1 to just 11-4 what did that take I wonder?
By:

When: 18 Dec 23 17:19
Do not be fooled by it. Gerri's prices here were near 90/48/44/42/38/26. I know because I 'lay' him at these prices.

Gerri Colombe, one of the rising stars of the staying chase division, is not guaranteed to take his place in the Ladbrokes King George VI Chase, with connections set for a nervy week of weather watching before Boxing Day.

The seven-year-old shot to the head of the market for the Grade 1, overtaking longtime favourite Bravemansgame, after "serious money" came for him last month but on Monday he had drifted out to 4-1 generally (from 3s).

Bookmakers now consider Allaho the one to beat in a wide-open King George after Irish champion trainer Willie Mullins confirmed the two-time Ryanair Chase winner would travel to Kempton, and he was duly cut to 7-4.

Whether Gerri Colombe lines up will depend on the conditions, according to owner Robcour's Brian Acheson, with the ground currently a mix of good to soft and good and a relatively dry week ahead.

Gerri Colombe – viewed by many as the most likely contender to deny Galopin Des Champs a Cheltenham Gold Cup repeat – took his record to nine from ten when motoring home in Down Royal's Champion Chase in November for Gordon Elliott. He has never raced on any surface quicker than good to soft and also has an entry in the Savills Chase at Leopardstown on December 28.

Acheson said: "It's going to be down to the weather whether Gerri Colombe goes to the King George. They are due a bit of rain early this week but there's not much after that and if we travel over, we have to go on Saturday so we haven't decided whether he'll go yet."

The ground at Kempton is a 50-50 split between good to soft and good ahead of an expected wet day on Tuesday, when up to 10mm of rain is forecast. The outlook is for it to stay mostly dry for the rest of the week but more rain is anticipated on Boxing Day.

Clifford said on Monday: "We've got lovely ground as we speak, a mixture of good to soft and good but that's not going to be the case after Tuesday's forecast of 10mm. At this stage it looks like there may be sporadic rainfall, not in great quantities, throughout the week.

The simple answer to stop everyone moaning and accept that horse's plans can quite naturally change from one week to the next due to a variety of circumstances , is for punters to stop ante post guessing.

Otherwise i'm afraid you get what you deserve and have nobody to blame but yourself.   Happy

I do not think Gerri is ground dependent. He's won on good to soft/soft/heavy. At the moment Leopardstown is good to yielding = good to soft (right?) similar to Kempton.

So, is it Allaho dependent?

100% agree with Geoff m, trying to predict who runs where / when is a complete Mugs game, anything can happen to horse, weather changes, etc.

Let the posturing overpaid Trainers and Owners have the scraps on the Ante Post market to themselves.

Gordon Elliott has said Gerri Colombe will run in the Savills Chase at Leopardstown next week rather than the King George VI Chase, meaning a blockbuster showdown with Gold Cup hero Galopin Des Champs is on the cards.

Having assumed favouritism for the King George at one stage last week, Gerri Colombe had drifted from as short as 5-2 all the way out to 10-1 on Thursday with connections worried about the weather forecast at Kempton.

Owner Brian Acheson floated the surprise option of Tramore on New Year’s Day on Thursday morning, but Elliott made the final decision on Thursday evening and said his top-class seven-year-old would head to Leopardstown for the Savills Chase on December 28.

Gerri Colombe will meet not only Galopin Des Champs there, but probably Fastorslow too as Martin Brassil said it was his intended target after defeating the Gold Cup winner for a second time in the John Durkan Chase at Punchestown last month.

Gerri Colombe has won nine of his ten starts under rules, including his first outing in open company last month when he edged past Envoi Allen to win a thrilling Ladbrokes Champion Chase at Down Royal, but Galopin Des Champs and Fastorslow are likely to provide him with a sterner test of his Gold Cup credentials.

Explaining the decision to bypass Kempton in favour of Leopardstown, Elliott told the Racing Post: "We've made our minds up and Gerri Colombe will go to Leopardstown next week for the Savills Chase. With the ground continuing to dry out at Kempton, we just felt the race at Leopardstown would be a better option for him.
