Opened an a/c with tem mid-Oct 23. Staked £750 and lost £376. Last month I staked £3880 and lost £1925. My usual stake is £30 e/w on Sat tv races on outsiders. My own selections, which have been really poor. Biggest bet has been £100 win. Last weekend I was contacted to say that they had set my losses to £7k a year as they felt I could afford that. This weekend, and 0 bets later, I'm contacted to say they have restricted my account and I can no longer place bets. I'm staggered to be honest.

Have it all their own way, they need to act like bookies but sadly those days are well gone.
Report Thelastfling December 2, 2023 9:14 AM GMT
I know, and I don't know why I'm staggered as I know the current bookie situation. I just thought it was preposterous they made me go through the affordability checs one weekend and then restricted me the next (which according to them was nothing to do with affordability.) How do you keep an account open nowadays?
Report s.kenbo December 2, 2023 9:27 AM GMT
If you’re placing singles then this place is far better for that. Keep your bookie accounts for the accas.
Report Thelastfling December 2, 2023 9:43 AM GMT
Yes, pricewise I'm sure. Used to get some better place odds, free bets etc with Corals and last week they gave me money back on Shishkin. I'm old fashioned. I like a bet with a bookie but I guess that's not really possibler anymore.
Report liberator of the oppressed December 2, 2023 9:50 AM GMT
Look at the share price that will make you smile always a silver lining somewhere says it all Ronnie might have something to say.
Report s.kenbo December 2, 2023 9:56 AM GMT
I can understand that, TLF.
Report sparrow December 2, 2023 10:02 AM GMT
Free bets and money back are for a reason and none of that is being "old fashioned".
Report Trident December 2, 2023 10:03 AM GMT
The REAL reason horse racing finances are taking a hit is Very simple.  The Racing Post won't highlight because they are owned by Casinos. It's not Affordability Checks you need to worry about, it's bookmakers closing lifelong horse racing fans accounts, claiming it's a"trader's decision". Just use the Betfair Exchange and stay well away from bookmakers.

There are no real bookmakers now, they are Casinos ready to fleece the vulnerable.

My usual stake is £30 e/w on Sat TV races on outsiders. Just to point out if you wait 1 min before the off on big Saturday races you should get your £30 EW on, and at Much Bigger odds if you're backing outsiders. I, too, enjoy backing outsiders, EW. Good Luck!

^ On the Betfair Exchange I forgot to point out.

On here you mean?? I am going to have to come more on here but I just think it's a shame that the industry have followed for so long has got to a point where people have to go to exchanges

Report sparrow December 2, 2023 10:28 AM GMT
You seem to really admire bookmakers thelastfling when you talk about "having to go to exchanges" as if it was something almost illegal and shameful.

It's not that I admire them, I'm just old and not as good with technology etc etc. I just liked the simplicity of doing it with the bookies plus I  found it easier to do multiples there etc etc.

Report sparrow December 2, 2023 10:49 AM GMT
I'm probably not far off your age lastfling but I do realise that multiples can't be done on here, other than that its quite simple to bet online.
Report dambuster December 2, 2023 10:56 AM GMT
I had a Coral account, only used it for £2/£3 multiples, mainly on big race days and saturday.
No pricewise, no arbs, no dodgy EW just my own selections. got restricted to £0.00 after only losing £91 in a month.
i tried to open a Ladbrokes after, but chinned before i placed a bet, as they're the same company i'm told.
Report Celtic warrior December 2, 2023 12:06 PM GMT
The only reason to ever have bookie accounts is for matched betting, using free bets, until you inevitably get gubbed.

Otherwise dont place a single bet with them. stick to the exchanges.
Report Celtic warrior December 2, 2023 12:07 PM GMT

Yes coralls and laddies are the same outfit.

They must I suspect like all bookmakers be losing custom and customers and revenue hand over fist do the stats/figs back that up? How do you turn that around? What happens when there is nobody left except the planks and woohoo's surely AC's have to get to the shops and FOBTs soon.

They thought they were being smart a few years ago gutting rid of experienced traders and having a strategy of fleece high rolling addicts and restrict normal racing punters (hiring 20 year olds on 20k a year to trawl through accounts and restrict them) - However surely its clear now in this landscape that you need to go back a few steps and actually embrace the normal racing punters business (expecially as all concessions are gone and margins increased)
Report Celtic warrior December 4, 2023 10:15 PM GMT
racing 6699,

Essentially their business model is impossible now betfair is here, much lower running costs.

Unless you can match bet with them they are totally redundant. so yes, they can't exist in the long term.

For the 99.5% of horse racing punters betfair liquidity is totally adequate, so bookies cant even win there. The only hope was to try and close down exchanges, which they failed to do 10 years ago. Anyone rememeber their campaign that suggested EVERY single lay bet was ****!

Very rarely in the business world do you see a product being marketed which is exactly the same as another's product but at a clearly higher price. Waitrose do add value due to its customers as they feel special. I feel special when I get 2.68 (after commission) instead of 2.56 about EXACTLY the same horse.
Report impossible123 December 5, 2023 7:09 AM GMT
I've been a punter for over 4 decades, but not been to a bookie shop for over 2 decades except to use the toilet. Now, this is only as the last resort as the "custodians" of fobt are usually unwilling or rude like the 'baldie' in Carshalton. Otherwise a major supermarket is the better alternative.

There are still too many high street bookies surplus to requirement despite a major culling as a result of a reduction in max per spin to £2, and their reluctance to take bets. I believe any high street should not have more than 2 bookies (one at either end). Anymore is an eye-sore with youngish-able-bodies standing outside smoking a ****.

Turnover on the horseracing markets seem to drop every year on here. I would have thought it would drop in the shops but increase on here. I think horse racing has an uncertain future.

Just looking at the Coral monthly P/L, hardly bookie breaking!! October +£300, November +£200. More losing selections than winners!

Just looking at the Coral monthly P/L

they're not looking at that.  they're looking at the odds you took.  betting 15/8 shots at 11/4 will anger them beyond belief.  even if the dog finishes 6th.  lost there but long term they know you'll be a winner, which isn't acceptable.
Report hulk23 December 6, 2023 11:40 AM GMT
if you open an account with any of these characters, you bet £20 at 6/1.  goes off 4/1 they will already be all over your account.  do it again it will be referred to a trader, a third time you'll be gubbed.  all lose, down £60, account limited to peanuts.

I know several “old school” bookies traders.
They are all smart cookies!

You must be pretty observant impossible in your pit stops to the bookies toilets or you must use them pretty regularly, for someone who hasn't used them in 20 years you have a very strong opinion in what happens or the abilities of those  who works in them.

They are not bothered about horse racing it’s simple really, if you look at entain a massive global brand including lads and corals they make a billion profit a year and that’s from casinos, slots and the like mostly abroad so it’s going to get worse for uk horse racing punters imo it looks like a smoke screen to clamp down on horse racing punters as it’s very small profits compared to the rest of the global markets, getting punters moaning and complaining is what it’s about to make it look like that’s what they are doing to comply with the new regulations coming in, it’s a smokescreen imo

It’s taken me a while to work out what’s going on with restrictions but it just clicked, a bit like immigration they could stop it anytime but they bring in billions in tax if you look at the figures we as a country would be financially worse off without them and it’s used to pay for the recent tax cuts so it’s not really going to stop is it no matter what figures the fiddle us with
