by Chris Cook this morning in the Front Runner, Racing Post :
The racing world was alerted to an imminent landmark last week when Hayley Turner tweeted a picture of herself, being led in aboard a winner she'd just ridden at Chelmsford. Above it, she wrote: "998!"
Yes, the jockey who blazed a trail for other women in British Flat racing is close to her thousandth success. The timing looked uncanny because Turner's next two rides were both fancied, one at Redcar on Friday and then Docklands in the Balmoral Handicap which closes Champions Day - what a way to do it!
"That would have been nice," says Turner, a shade wistfully. "That was the dream." She has an alternative in mind, as we'll find out, but the odds also seem against it.
First, I wanted to check her maths because her many winners in Britain over the past 23 years add up to 976. There's also been a winner in Ireland, Arthurian Fame in the Microsoft Cup at Leopardstown a few years ago.
As it turns out, Turner has enjoyed quite a bit of overseas success over the years. "I've got 21 abroad," she says and tries to reel off all the countries where she's ridden winners. "France, Italy, Germany, Mauritius, South Africa, America, Japan. I think that's it..."
The one of those I remember clearly would be I'm A Dreamer, who finished strongly to win the Beverly D, a Grade 1, at Arlington Park, Chicago back in 2012.
That means Turner is now one of those athletes whose career has outlived a venue where they enjoyed major success. Arlington staged its final race in 2021 and was bought by the Chicago Bears. Demolition of the grandstand was completed last month.
Setting aside such sad thoughts, I ask which of her overseas jaunts was the most fun. "South Africa," she says, "because that tied in with a holiday they put on for jockeys that's always been quite good fun. America was the highlight, of course."
When you reach a major milestone, it's natural to look back and reflect on the journey. So much has changed for jockeys since Turner started out, and in particular for female jockeys. Her success has opened up many eyes to possibilities they had not previously considered.
"It's nice to see how well the girls are doing," she says. "The standard of female riders these days is so much better. You look at the likes of Hollie and Saffie and it makes me quite proud to see how much easier it's getting for them all and how much more respect they get.
"I always remember my first winner without my claim, that was one of the most satisfying. I thought, 'Oh my word, I could actually do this for a living.'
"I never expected to do as well as I have done. I didn't even dream of it, really."
These days, she notes, booking a female jockey to compete against men is an unremarkable act. Older fans of the game will readily remember a time when this was not the case.
"It was always an issue. Michael Bell had to battle with the owners. He put me forward. And then, when I got the chance, I took it."
With the full benefit of hindsight, Turner reckons she "probably shouldn't have retired" at the end of 2015. "I just needed a year out at the time."
After a bit of broadcasting, she returned to the saddle full-time in 2018 and has since ridden four winners at Royal Ascot. The first of those ended a barren run of 32 years for female jockeys at the royal meeting but Hollie Doyle and Laura Pearson have since had their own moments there, helping to normalise what had once been unusual.
Does she have an idea of when she might once more call time on her career? That question gets kicked into the long grass where it belongs. Turner's career is evidently fruitful, enjoyable and sustainable.
"I'm still paying my mortgage, I'm enjoying it, I'm doing okay. You look at the likes of Joe Fanning, Franny Norton, Rab Havlin, Rab's riding better than ever and he's ten years older.
"We're quite lucky as athletes that we can continue to a certain age, whereas footballers only have very short careers." We discuss the support made available to riders through the Injured Jockeys Fund and the Professional Jockeys Association which makes the job so much more attractive these days.
"It's less lonely, you're getting looked after a lot. It's amazing to see how far it's come since I started."
She is a key part of the operation at Harry Eustace's stable, for whom she rode Docklands to win the Britannia at Royal Ascot four months ago. "It's a really fun yard to be involved in.
"I think that's what I always enjoyed about being at Michael Bell's, being in the team. I'd ride out from the yard and get on really well with the staff and you know the horses better.
"I ride out for David Simcock as well. He's been a big supporter of mine from day one."
Simcock will be her ally today as Turner seeks to get her 999th win, on Pourquoi in a 1m3½f handicap at Yarmouth. And then ... who knows? Does she have in her mind any ideal plan for how she would reach 1,000?
"I'd have liked it to be at Southwell, just because my first ride was there and obviously it's my home town. I know it's not the most glamorous, people would think Ascot would be ideal, but I just think it would be a nice story.
"Especially because my nana used to go there all the time to watch me. We've got a bench at Southwell which says: 'In memory of Nana Bunny, Hayley Turner's biggest fan'. It's a really popular bench, right by the paddock where she used to stand."
But the timing of last week's storm was unfortunate. Southwell is still flooded. Its next four fixtures, up to and including November 4, have been abandoned and I wouldn't bet on the November 15 fixture taking place either, though we can cross our fingers and wish everyone well as they try to restore order.
The next time Turner rides there, I expect she'll be comfortably into four-figures.
Nope I just don’t do a hero, apart from the military
Being a jockey is a job to earn a living like any other job or profession, they get paid for the job they love doing,we hear it all the time
People go through life in the same job big deal……work, earn, retire and enjoy….ffs

Hayley not likely going to get a better chance of getting the 1000 up with Britinnica in the 8-00 at Newcastle. seems to be taking as long as it took Andrew Thornton.

I'm surprised very few outside trainers use Ms Turner. I think she's as good if not better than most present better supported female jockeys. Another is Ms Gordon.

i've noticed over the last few days trainers HT normally rides for have had plenty of runners yet she hasn't been on any of them...
makes me think she has one lined up and is keeping it for a special occasion...
i might be wrong tho.

as i said swifty i've no idea if Southwell is raceable now or in the near future...
i know it was flooded...
and i knew Southwell was her home track so i put 2 and 2 together and came up with 22.

but there's no doubt she hasn't been taking rides over the last few days she probably could have ridden...
Balding...Eustace...Simcock...
which says to me she is saving her next winner for a big occasion...
maybe Newcastle as Hulk says...
maybe Southwell...
i could be completely wrong and it could end up being at Lingfield or Great leighs.

from what i remember the Balding horse drifted and the Palmer horse was backed swifty...
but as my memory is poor i have probably got that the wrong way around.

pretty sure she has ridden that a few times before...
she ain't on it...
she's definitely holding back for the big day imv.
she probably could have ridden Flag Carrier in the 5:30 also.

Ms Hayley does not get the same support as some other "senior" female jocks. Of topic: Waht was the reason Ms Gordon is no longer riding for Palmer? She was a headline female jock not so long ago. If a trainer is merely exercising their "duty or commitment" to owners I can understand.
I hope Ms Hayley does not retire post 1000 unless she does not want to do it anymore.

I remember when Stan Mellor was on 999 winners and it was big news at the time as no NH jockey had ridden 1,000 winners. I cannot remember how many rides it took but if I had bet on them with the martingale staking plan I would have ran out of cash. He did eventually get there but many a bookie had a Caribbean holiday that year.

On 10 December 1971, Mellor rode his 999th winner at Cheltenham. Despite another six rides there the next day, he couldn't add to it. Mellor spent another week trying to pass the landmark, racking up seven more losers in the process. His wife travelled with him every day so as not to miss the celebrations.
Finally, at Nottingham on 18 December 1971, he piloted grey gelding Ouzo to victory in the otherwise unremarkable Christmas Spirit Novices' Chase, thus becoming the first jump jockey to ride 1,000 winners. Dismounting from Ouzo, Mellor proclaimed it "a great relief" and was presented with an inscribed silver salver by his wife on behalf of the racecourse.[5]

Southwell could return to racing this month, but with the public. It's waterlogged, and some infrastructures will need major repairs or replacements apparently.

Katstar for Harry Eustace in the 5.00 Wolv was as high as 22/1 this morning and down to 14/1 at present (Sea the Stars gelding).
The 5.30 mount, Twilight Melody (25/1) for Joseph Parr at least has some experience on some of these and ran prominently before tiring on soft last time. Wouldn't be surprised if she ran quite well again.

I think at least she should be giving Star Zinc a good go in the 6.30 Wolves. Timeform : Preference is for STAR ZINC, who was a comfortable winner at Newcastle earlier this month and remains on a workable mark. Thapa Vic and Intervention have both performed well here recently and head the list of dangers.

Fair play to her. She was the first female jockey I had reasonable confidence in backing on the flat against the top class male jockeys. She has above average tactical intelligence and was strong enough in a finish. She deserves that.

I knew she'd do it. The question is why it took so long the last few months? I'm disappointed not many trainers use her these days esp the bigger ones; Josephine Gordon is another.

jockeys are fashionable one day and unfashionable the next impossible...
only takes a fall out with a trainer or owner or a 'poor' ride here or there and their career is in tatters..
josephine gordon a prime example...
nicola currie too.

What's happened with Ms Gordon and Ms Currie? I thought either would have matched Ms Doyle in the saddle. The last named has been passed-over by most owners at Clarehaven Stables too.

Jockeys are fashionable one ride and unfashionable then until their next winner
Only takes the perception of a bad ride that proves costly to the punter and their reputation is temporarily in tatters
Every jockey can be used as a prime example.
Except young Billy who can seemingly do no wrong to the subjective eye , give it time though.
I'd go further in the eyes of punters Hibby...Jockeys are fashionable one ride and unfashionable then until their next winnerOnly takes the perception of a bad ride that proves costly to the punter and their reputation is temporarily in tattersEvery
Great achievement from Hayley, is she also the female to have ridden for the longest period having ridden in every year for the past 23 years. Usually the ladies only stay riding for about 10 years i'd guess before going off to have babies. I think she's been great for the sport and as a role model to young women jockeys and a nice lady to boot.
