You must have been watching a different programme from me.
Steve was calling all the measures ridiculous all night on RacingTV

"It reeks of a complete misunderstanding of the subject."

Steve Mellish on affordability checks and his wider fears for the betting industry, racing punters and our sport.

"I just think the whole thing is completely wrong and will be totally ineffective," adds our pundit

I thought he talked a lot of sense ............especially stating that the main villains of the piece were our "friends" the bookmakers...

I belatedly filled in the consultation questionnaire recently and found some of the questions hard to answer. I bet every day but have not yet been asked for proof that I can afford it as I bet to small stakes and my annual loss is less than a good party for family. However, I am angry at the restrictions and some of the implications. The worst aspect is that bookmakers are allowed to see evidence of any customer's financial status. Which of their staff are used for this, are they properly trained, competent or even honest? A list of customers with fat bank accounts could be sold to the wrong people and probably will be. No wonder several wealthy people have refused to have anything to do with it. Mellish seemed almost resigned to the likely outcome that racing will never be the same again.

It was a good programme last night. As bookmakers sponsor most things it was nice to hear Steve and Steve Jones opinions on bookmakers. Most guests are scared to say anything against them. It can only be bookmakers who are targeting wealthy owners for bank details. Next thing they will be asking J.P.McManus for his.
Thats when we know the game really is f****d.

jones and melish lose their argument with this game of skill line around racing
a, its not a game of skill since exchanges arrived you can literally win money of people for something thats already taken place, NO 1 RULE FOR ALL PUNTERS HAS ALWAYS BEEN IF YOU CANT WIN YOU CANT LOSE
and
b,99% of so called skilled racing punters are loser,s
Report clacton October 20, 2023 11:01 AM BST
They both opposed all the nonsense thats going on. Whether its a game of skill is irrelevant.
They didn't lose their argument at all.
Report clacton October 20, 2023 11:02 AM BST
They were saying picking winners of horse races was a game of skill compared to the casino games.
Report 1st time poster October 20, 2023 11:32 AM BST
does it matter if 99% of those doing either end up as losers ?,
never been on a casino game but if it was that or build a bet,i,d go for the casino game

Agree with clacton 100%.

I will be willing to bet that most of the members of the Gambling Commission own shares or Unit Trusts that involve significant risk. Do they reveal their bank accounts to their stockbrokers or investment managers? It is an outrageous intrusion into peoples lives.

Casino games are designed to be addictive, it's in their DNA. Theoretically, horse racing and football are sporting events that people bet on the outcomes of, they are not designed to be addictive in of themselves. Though obviously, betting companies have created products around those events that mirror the style of casino games.

I have recently opened an account with B**MG*. In fairness they have an immediate warning that checks may be applied to my business.

The problem is that this means I can ONLY now match bet with them , whilst keeping my account balance near to zero.

I cant risk having a normal win bet to proper stakes, as if i win i will certainly find it very difficult to ever extract my net winnings.

So in effect the bookies are now using this new regulations for their own purposes. It is not a level playing field.
