I often wonder how many of these people would have managed in the past when almost everybody smoked. Of course most would probably have joined them in the habit.

Sparrow Does the 450 at Cattterick bring back memories. Ithink it was the catchphrase of the firm your dad worked for. Have a nice evening. Ronnie .
Sorry Ronnie, not with you on this 450 Catterick race. My dad worked for various bookmakers over the years the latest one in 50s and 60s was John White senior. Myself in the 60s was at Maxie Parker's shop in Poland Street Central London.

Ronnie.....I hadn't heard that about the "White Umbrella" although my dad worked for Johnny White mostly in the 1950s at White City dogs. He also clerked for his brother Siddy White at Stamford Bridge although Siddy was better known as a Tic Tac man.

Oh yea, ELG. I was 16y/o on my last holiday with my parents. Seemed mad that I could go to the back of the plane for a smoke. Think it was the last rows. Felt sorry for the poor feckers five from the back!
£25 in the Canaries for 200.

Yep. Buses and cinemas are long gone. Never thought the pub ban would come in though. Todays 21y/o are shocked that you could smoke in a pub in the mid 2000’s.

The few lads I know at that age are only recreational drug users. Same as the pub, they only really go at weekends.
It didn’t matter to us what day of the week it was!

incredible to think that non-smokers had to put up with this pre-ban. they used to complain about their clobber reeking of smoke but selfish smokers took no notice. i didnt anyway. when the ban was brought in i swore id never have another oily. then i said id never pay 10 quid for a packet. now its only after a few sherbets. lucky that doesnt happen too often
the sheer revolting nature of it hit home after the ban when the druggies had to go outside and then came back in after their fix and the smell was really quite nasty, but it had not been that noticeable hitherto because the whole gaff was swirling in it
the only handy thing about going outside was the opportunity for flirting with someone you would not otherwise encounter. smirting was the unimaginative definition of it

alcohol will be next, mitolo will have to stock up and stash it under his floorboards
Well I say alcohol will be next, it's been underway already, how many pubs did their covid policies help close?

Cost of smoking to the NHS is said to be around 2.5 billion pounds per year. The cost to the NHS of obesity is estimated to be 6.0 billion pounds a year, surely the government would be better concentrating their efforts on banning fat people from eating fatty foods.

George,I think pubs were pricing themselves out of existence long Before Covid, whilst now they are even dearer trying to make up the Covid losses. Crying shame really that for most folk now drinking indoors is the Only option.

Just yet another choice removed from the public, remarkable how it’s all coming within 1 generation. Nitrous oxide is another being criminalised by the end of the year, which followed all psychoactive chemicals that were clamped down on about a decade ago.
Smoking is already banned where it causes a nuisance to others….this is yet again an example of how people arn’t allowed to make their own decisions. And yet another example of the tories imposing left wing ideology. Ever since Trump emulated Putin in his approach to politics you have had a free-for-all where ideology is cherry picked at will or polemic policies welded together akin to brexit nonsense.

"A 2017 study from the Institute of Economic Affairs estimated a net saving of £14.7 billion per annum at the rates of consumption at the time, with the costs smokers incurred significantly outweighed by the sum of tobacco duty paid and the old-age expenditures avoided due to premature mortality."

£10 billion would be a good chunk to lose each year. Not sure how accurate this is but Google says fuel duty is around £25b each year. What do the powers that be decide? Let’s all go electric asap!

The strange thing is how long tobacco has been available when you think of all the other carcinogens that have been banned. The duty is a big factor plus how many of the decision makers smoke themselves. I can honestly say that I have never put a cigarette or cigar or a pipe in my mouth in my entire 79 year life and never understood why anyone would but that is just me. I do like fatty foods so I am not a health fanatic, I just found the idea of inhaling smoke unpleasant.

Why on earth would I? Costs money, mostly tax and don't really want to be addicted. Other things I don't spend money on are pets. I enjoy wildlife and that costs me nothing. Perhaps I am just mean.

It is a dirty habit, but snuff was worse certainly for health, that stuff was potent for cancer and I remember all the old lads around here used to walk around looking somebody 5hit down their shirts
I doubt having resisted so long you’d get addicted, if the mind is against something you don’t tend to.
Certainly not from 1 cig, and the odds of that killing you are such long odds.
But I’d probably agree seeing nature as an alternative to pets is tight. You can’t really compare the two.

Not sure why not Dusty. Some birds can become quite tame if they are fed although that is not something I would encourage. A dog seems just a big nuisance to me. On the odd occasion when my son brings one, it is a big tie and of course a never ending expense. I like to be able to wake up, look at the weather and the tide times and decide where I am going for a bird watching walk without having to refer to any other person or a pet.
