So many horses and too few races in Ireland so he had no choice? And of course any race in GB is easier to win with a lesser light.

Not a jumps man my self but I did wonder why on earth a trainer such as Mullins would send a horse there.

Owned by Paul Byrnes, same as the Emmet Mullins horse that won at big odds-on at Newton last week. You remember - the one that Harry Findlay was boasting about having backed, on account of Byrnes having told him it was a certainty.

No sign of Fat Harry this time though. In fact no sign of anyone at all. The horse had been sent over with literally no one but the girl leading it up. Brian Hayes walked into the parade ring, and Luke Harvey asked for a word, but Hayes wouldn't give him one. Got straight on the horse with a smirk on his lips. And the state of the horse! Looked awful, with not a muscle behind its saddle. I can say for certain that this is one Irish-trained horse not currently on steroids.

No chance of asking Hayes for his opinion after the race either, as he'd removed the saddle and disappeared before the horse even reached the unsaddling area. The girl led it into the fourth-placed spot, where a racecourse employee asked whether it wanted water. It had one sip, and then the girl led it away straight to the racecourse stables. And that was that.

And no. I'm not talking through my pocket.

It's so much more obvious when you know the result. I'm still after-timing here.

The problem was the opposition. The second-fav had looked dreadfully slow when getting up on the line the time before. And as for the other three ...

The Official BHA Handicapper will NOT automatically give ALVANIY a Handicap RATING after today -

Nor - ANY of the other horses in the race - NONE of whom have a published Rating - Even today's Winner - Wonderful Eagle - who was NOT awarded a Handicap Rating following it's previous (inconclusive) success.

Wonderful Eagle will be carrying an Unpublished  and tentative Rating of 100 for that previous Win - as the 5th horse from that race has been Rated 97

The Handicapper is NOT obliged to Publish/Award a Rating for ANY horse until it ENTERS a Handicap race, though.

On the above prognosis - re: the previous Wonderful Eagle's success - having merely been replicated today (Doubtful) ...

ALVANIY will be carrying a 'Pencil' (but Unpublished)  Rating of 92 in the Handicapper's book.

I read what screaming said about the state of the horse which fails to explain why the horse ran at all in such a poor condition. We're talking about a trainer at the top of the NH tree here not some two bob stable.

To be clear, there was nothing wrong with how the horse was turned out. You know - it was brushed and had all four shoes in place - that sort of thing.

It was the fact that behind the saddle you could see the backbone, and below that the flanks and the quarters dropping away to nothing. It's not ill-treatment or anything. I mean, there are plenty of 75-rated hurdlers who look like that. But this is supposed to be the Closutton maestro, building his horses up through months of work.

Odd.

I was referring more to screaming's opening sentence.

The horse being owned by the same owner of that 'miraculous ' improver - THE SHUNTER - who went from Winning a DOWNPATRICK MAIDEN Hurdle (not long after the horse was transferred to him) > to Winning at the CHELTENHAM FESTIVAL - before being Sold/Offloaded to J P McManus ... and then, somewhat falling off the end of the .....

Slate Lane has been running in similarly weak UK races for the same connections, aside from the trainer is Emmet and not Willie. The last win was valuable enough, but the first two were weak races and pots, and it was backed like it had already won on the first one before the race, after a trainer switcheroo.

In fact the owner has run several in the UK, not always valuable races, so it may be under the behest of the owner. The question might be why it is with Willie and not Emmet.
