Just read on Wiki. My thoughts go out to the guy. I loved his riding. He was superb. RIP Greville.

There is a road named after him in Newmarket ,I think the Queen wasn’t offended when he stuck two fingers up in front of her.

Mr Starkey was the pilot for the big races. He was very reliable, and seldom not deliver; Mr Harwood (this bloke owns a mega Range Rover franchise) stoody by him (those were the days where loyalty was a premium) post Mr Starkey's misjudgement at Epsom.

Mr Starkey on Cataldi (Lincoln); Warning; Lear Fan; Phardante; Cacoethes; Dancing Brave. These were the horses I remember him on.

I still remember his last ride, after which he got drenched by his weighing room colleagues, I think it was the November Handicap but NOT at Doncaster.  Can't remember where, somewhere in Yorkshire. Was on C4 1989

Oh, I remember Lear Fan in those black and yellow colours and winning a small fortune and believing in Greville.

As he was weaving through the field if he was going well he would bark like a dog to let them know he was coming through to win.

'jimnast', unfortunately no. I was still a full-time dedicated student then and only watched horseracing at the weekend on a black/white (my own) tv. Also, no access to video just bookies ticker-tape usually made-up commentary.

But, I did go to Goodwood post Epsom to watch Dancing Brave winning in a canter; racegoers were (sarcastically) clapping Mr Starkey 2f to winning line.

Well done Cardinal no sp returned

Back then there was a rule if you couldn’t win you couldn’t lose and with betting tax that would have been the case

That old rule seemed to have disappeared when the new style bookmakers/exchanges came along.

Frankie Dettori may have played a part in Starkers retirement

LET ME EXPLAIN

Luca Cumani was going to replace Ray Cochrane as stable jocky with Frankie, Guy Harwood snapped up Ray Cochrane as stable jocky (not Abdullah nags, Eddery was already in place)

My Harwood was know to Grev and the rest as Mr Gud: a strange, but believeable mixture for Guy Harwood as good and God.

Impossible are you thinking of Mtoto 2 years later? that nag would have been about 1/8

Wasn't there a Tote return on Dancing Brave for that race at Goodwood - assuming it was the warm up race for the Arc ? I was there and remember passing comment to a mate at the time.

The grand sire of denman is mtoto should have won the arc

Tcat I would imagine the tote has to return £1.10 not 100% on that

jimnast I believe that was the case; DB won by a street - I recall it was cracking flags on the day so underfoot conditions wouldn't have been similar to what would have been expected in Paris.

'Cardinal Scott', no I just watched the race (Select Stakes). He was 1/8. I knew Mr Starkey was onboard (I was there), but wiki reckoned Eddery rode the horse every time post Epsom.

Mtoto was one of my favourite horses; Muis Roberts onboard.

By:

Could've opened up 1/8.
Maybe no s/p if he went 1/10.
By:

Yes that’s possible penzance but definitely no sp returned
