I think the champion hurdle market on here the last week or so indicated that.

If there are doubts as to whether or not he would stay the Gold Cup trip, as stated in the RP article, then I'd say it's the correct decision. Only NH / N De B know if that's really the case, let's hope that is the truth, rather than it being used by NH to keep the horse over hurdles, if, as suspected, that may well be his preference.

Correct decision in my eyes

A few years to go, but in Spring 2026, who knows we may be claiming him best hurdler of all time

If he was to go chasing, then last season would have been the time.

Once he went down the Champion Hurdle route, that is where he would always stay.

Will never go over fences now, 3 runner Champion Hurdle coming up

Hopefully they do something remotely adventurous and take in the Irish Champion or French maybe.

Hurdle pool seems more shallower this year than usual

Nicky did take the unbeatable sprinter sacre to punchestown so it’s possible this horse might cross the sea in February

low and slick over hurdles

Deflating.

The next six months are going to be so annoying, with everyone pretending to be excited by a horse repeating what we already know it can do.

I've idolized this horse ever since that astonishing speed figure in the Supreme Novices. Now I'll be laughing like a drain if it gets beaten in the Fighting Fifth.

Shock ,horror .Who da thunkd it. His last race @ Aintree over a longer trip gave indications he wasnt likely to be staying a gold cup trip. Expected him to pull right away from 2 out but when shaken up either idling in front ,(which he certainly hasnt done in previous races) or showing stamina limitations.

Rothko, they haven't bothered to find out:

[Henderson] said on Tuesday: "He will stay over hurdles. It's not really about him schooling ..."

Geoffm, you may well be right. But that's not the point. If winning a Gold Cup means Constitution Hill having to dig for everything on the run-in to succeed, then that's what would make him an all-time great. Ducking the challenge won't.

Think back to Desert Orchid. Left-handed on rain-sodden ground over 3 1/4 miles at Cheltenham was everything which that horse despised. Overcoming it was what made that horse the greatest for twenty years.

Not sure why the Gold Cup would factor into whether he went over fences or not. In fact, the route that Henderson did mention when talking about the potential of going chasing was the 2m novice route culminating in the Arkle. Which wouldn't have ruled out the Gold Cup in 2025 but probably made the Champion Chase more likely.

It contributed to it certainly.  His Irish National win did a great deal too to set him up alongside every other horse great chaser in history.
As for Constitution Hill I applaud the decision to stay a hurdler, for at last another season.
For me it will just be brilliant to see him get to next season, fit, without mishap, and attacking that Cheltenham hill with his tent on his back again!
Sorry acey - couldn;t resist it.  Love Laugh

so the ascot gold cup, gold cup, boat race ,tom cobley and all promised by buckley will have to wait till hendo gets sick of pocketing prize money at 10,s on,whilst preparing chantry house or some other slow as a boat chaser for gold cup,

There was no chance he was going chasing at this stage of his career. I wrote as much when we were discussing it after Cheltenham. Less chance of injury hurdling, chasing ability unknown so why risk it? Will only switch to chasing when he gets too slow for hurdling. Expect him to be hurdling for next few seasons as prize money is good enough. It's a shame as Morley Street and Big Bucks both proved trying chasing and reverting if it doesn't work out perfectly feasible.

Who will want to take on a 177 rated horse this season Sad
By:
howard
When: 19 Sep 23 13:45
What would shut most people up would be if he ran in a handicap or two. Not that ratings tell you the best horse but he would likely top the all time numbers by a handicap performance.  Won't happen of course. No bottle these days.

I agree 100%, howard.

I was actually thinking about that last season.  The Schweppes used to be a natural target for Champion Hurdlers candidates. If Constitution Hill had run in the Schweppes under 12-0,, giving a couple of stone to everything, he would have been about evens. If he'd won it, he would have been The Greatest, no question.

But we'll never know.

Inevitable decision. Why risk injury running in novice chases for £10k until March and only then run in the Arkle which can be a graveyard for favourites for half the money of the CH? It costs a great deal of money to have a horse in training and they are not run to please punters.

Don't think it will ever jump a fence in public, i know hendo likes a familiar set pattern of races for his stars but Buckley seems like a sporting guy lets hope he persuades nicky to do something a little more adventurous, as howard said a handicap would be great otherwise its 3/4 runs for the next 2/3 years winning at prohibited odds and everyone left wondering, great horses need memorable performances to stay in the memory.

Better 5-6 shots ronnie. If you back it it's a long sweat. Although a probable winner.

Problem is, if nothing of real quality emerges against him it will affect peoples opinion of him, that WOW we all thought about him will be more and more diluted as time goes by and with every procession, it will become....meh. You will still get the purists who appreciate him but it won't be the same across the board.

Agree 100% need to see the weight carrying performances of old to live long in the memory. The Hennessey in 84 and the VC in 89 two races that ill always remember for personal reasons , great horses giving loads of weight gets the blood pumping.
