Place backing is often better.

E.g. in the 1.40, Miss Lightfandango should be at 4.0, that means the fav should be at least 10 ticks higher. But backing Lightfandango for 3 places has almost the same odds as laying the fav. So even if the fav is overbacked, it makes more sense to place back Miss than lay the fav because favs never lose. Whenever I lay the fav in these situations, the second fav I fancy finishes second.

Reading that opening post must be akin to having a conversation with Jimmy Cricket.

Problem is...and there's more.

I was right that Miss was better than the clown fav. How often do the top 3 favs finish in the last 3 with the fav dead last?

One of the top steamers of the day too. Ran like a 40/1 shot.
