It is dreadful for people who look forward to it each year.  Feel very sorry for everyone. I particularly hate the fact that the thug leading them says they have "no choice" but to strike. This has been going on for well over a year now. Hope you can find some alternative solution Ronnie. In terms of refunds, I am going on the Wednesday and the refund policy of York is by far the most generous and sensible of all courses. We would have received 100% if we had cancelled the Parade Ring last week and 75% yesterday. Pro-rata going forward. Anyway, best of luck.

Train drivers I would struggle to think of a more cushy number sitting on their arse all day pressing the odd button.

Hopefully Ronnie you will find another way of getting home or leave Friday but I suppose there would be no hotel refund.

Either way hope you get sorted out.

We have booked a rail and hotel package to go down to London Sat 26th August for 3 nights, mainly to visit Lords and watch Lancs play Middlesex in the 50 over cup on the Sunday.

Never gave the train strikes a thought when we booked. Guess we will find out nearer the day.

I know that for certain as my younger brother is a driver for South West trains.

If it were up to them alone, they would accept a zero % wage increase and be back to work as per normal.

ronnie rails -

National Express Coaches are really good nowadays - I went to London a few weeks ago - £7.99 (Don't know how they can do it)

But Nation al Expres do Nir di a DIRECT service from York to Darlington (I am guessing that is where you want to go to)

You have to go to Leeds and CHANGE - and the Time (after racing is very late , too)

HOWEVER - MEGABUS (pretty much the same as National Express - and your journey is only short) - Do a DIRECT York to Darlington - and at a highly convenient 8:40pm  (depart - from York RAILWAY STATION) - Arrive Darlington 10:00pm - for just £19.89.

Absolute NO BRAINER.

For the record .......Members of ASLEF, the train drivers' union, have voted overwhelmingly to continue strike action in the union's ongoing national dispute over pay. Commenting on the ballot results, General Secretary Mick Whelan said: “Once again our members have decided, and made it clear that we are in this for the long haul.14 Jun 2023.

When it comes down to it I make no apologies for supporting working people.
Report Cider August 12, 2023 5:57 AM BST
Far more working people are negatively affected by button pushers taking another extended weekend holiday, than the button pushers themselves.

That's how the ludicrous situation arrives where they get paid so much. that they don't care how many days they take off to try and extort even more cash of the working people. Oh yes and millionaire 'nhs' consultants leaving their patients to die, in the pursuit of a political battle.
Report SlippyBlue August 12, 2023 8:53 AM BST

It's an utterly absurd situation. They have extorted such levels of pay through striking that they don't need to get paid, so why not get some unpaid leave in the summer, a nice long weekend perhaps. Which enables them to leverage an even more luxurious position for themselves.

It's a completely different world nowadays, with all the various employment laws, minimum conditions, minimum wage etc that the option to strike should be removed. All the gvnt needs to do is ensure that there is a minimum acceptable standard of employment, set in law, for everyone employed. Which there obviously is currently.

If you don't like your job. Don't feel the conditions are quite good enough. Think you could do better elsewhere.

Quit and get another job.
Report sparrow August 12, 2023 9:12 AM BST
You will have voted for this government and its privatisation of the rail system so you have no right to complain.
Report Cider August 12, 2023 9:16 AM BST
I'm referring to all strike action. It should be outlawed. It is completely antiquated and can be used nefariously, as we are seeing. Mostly from people who get paid via the taxpayer, abusing taxpayers as the nature of their chosen job allows them to do so.
Report sparrow August 12, 2023 9:17 AM BST
If you had your way cider we would back in Victorian times.
Report Cider August 12, 2023 9:20 AM BST
Obviously not. As I stated, everything is now embedded in law anyway.

What do you think electively employed people should get, that is not already embedded within employment law?
Report impossible123 August 12, 2023 9:38 AM BST
I think it's time driverless trains are introduced. Train drivers have been holding the public for yonks now. In Singapore this is the norm; driver errors and accident also down as a result.

Another thing to consider the UK need to train personnel who can multi-task ie able to provide several public service/duties eg trains, buses, fire and ambulance brigade, ports, etc.

The above personnel earn as much as a junior doctor. Absolute shocking considering the education and qualification needed, and training, the personal interaction day-in-day-out esp in inner cities.

I doubt if Graham King who is getting £25 million a year to house migrants would get out of his bed for a bag a week to drive a train. Was anyone in the VIP queue for the Covid contract billions a trade unionist? The real criminals in this country are not the railwaymen and NHS staff.
Report Cider August 12, 2023 10:54 AM BST
Who is saying they are criminals?

They simply should not be able to ruin peoples' lives by not turning up for work that they contracted to do.

If you no longer like your lot that you wilfully opted into, get another job.

It's not that difficult.
Report SlippyBlue August 12, 2023 11:28 AM BST
I'd just like to add a quick post script to my earlier comments.

South West trains (based at Waterloo) are owned by 'First Group' and they have different contracts compared to other areas. Their drivers are NOT on strike but they do currently have an overtime ban. Their salary though is undoubtedly bordering on the obscene compared to other key workers, brother is on £72K basic.
Report sparrow August 12, 2023 11:38 AM BST
Interestingly I retired from First Group as a bus driver and as I said at the time of privatisation the bus companies were not fit and proper people to run our railways. But what do we know?

When Ronald Reagan had an air traffic control strike, he sacked the lot and replaced them . I've often wondered where the new ones came from as I doubt if there were hundreds of unemployed ATCs or that they could be trained up in a week. Anyone know?

Report Cider August 12, 2023 11:56 AM BST
TfL had just under £13 billion of debt at the end of March 2022.

How the fuuck an organisation running transport in London can be in such debt, is truly astonishing. Literally millions of willing, paying, daily passengers on tap.

Vulnerability has to be clearly defined using figures, how else can a regulator hold license holders to account for not imposing it?
And for those who have it imposed who by any sane person’s standards are clearly not vulnerable to have an avenue of redress.

Anything less is banana republic level.
