Sharpo would have managed.
Report jimnast August 6, 2023 9:35 AM BST
What a horse sparrow unconsidered in the market when bursting on the sprinting scene in the temple stakes them days ran at sandown,I remember seeing him win the July cup in the good old days when ran on a Thursday then finishing up at Perry Barr dogs watching west Germany beat France in the World Cup semi final ,the sprinting division then was so strong ,sharpo, marwelll and moorstyle all proper group one sprinters.it was racings version of Leonard, hagler,Duran and hearns.
Report sparrow August 6, 2023 10:01 AM BST
I'm no breeding expert but you never went far wrong with the progeny of Sharpo in soft or heavy ground, jimnast.
Report jimnast August 6, 2023 10:14 AM BST
No sparrow I’m no breeding expert either but he did seem to do well with his offspring’s when plenty of cut in the ground.
Report N-east Correspondent August 6, 2023 12:55 PM BST
Seen Sharpo win the Nunthorpe one time as part of a Pat Eddery treble
was some horse on soft ground right enough

Speaking of those boxers Jimnast not sure if you or anyone has watched Kings on Sky Docs but the four episodes are well worth a watch sometime.
Duran was some character and Haggler certainly the most underrated considering what he had to overcome to get a shot at the world titles.

Good afternoon north east

I’ve read the book the 4 kings and still remember watching the fights live in the picture houses of Manchester and the hagler Duran in Leeds ,we all had our favourites and nobody could disagree with anyone who had a different favourite they were all that good.

When you was watching sharpo at York it was in a period when the nunthorpe as called the William hill sprint.
Report stewarts rise August 6, 2023 1:03 PM BST
Probably read this in the wrong way Jimnast, but you then finished up at Perry Barr dogs watching west Germany beat France in the World Cup semi final!
You went to the dogs to watch a football match?Confused

listening to ruk at hamilton last night they reckon SOBA went up 40lb in a season, loved SOBA kept the faith for stewards cup win
wasnt moorstyle a similar rise came from seemingly nowhere to win group ones and champion sprinter
Report jimnast August 6, 2023 1:05 PM BST
In sharpos 3rd nunthorpe the great steve Cauthen rode him and stated after the race he hadn’t ever been so fast on a horse

Stewarts

It is a bit odd I know but I bumped into some people at the July meeting who invited me to Perry Barr after racing as they had some dogs running there,it just so happens it was the same night as that famous game, and almost everyone was glued to a pretty small television.

Thinking back it may have been hall green either way it was Birmingham.
Report jimnast August 6, 2023 1:11 PM BST
Yes 1st time poster moorstyle came through the ranks and was owned by a small owner.
Report jimnast August 6, 2023 1:14 PM BST
Before sharpo won his 3 nunthorpes the race was won by ahonoora who has a race named after him today.
Report jimnast August 6, 2023 1:16 PM BST

Soba was rated 66 by Timeform as a 2yo and that went up to 121 as a 3yo, so they made it a 55lb improvement.
Report 1st time poster August 6, 2023 1:38 PM BST
remember them been similar colours but were moorstyle/habbiti same owners ?
Report sparrow August 6, 2023 1:43 PM BST
Just unfortunate for Soba to be around at the same time as Habibti.
Report N-east Correspondent August 6, 2023 1:49 PM BST
Committed was another fine sprinter of that era, slammed Habibti in the William Hill Sprint and the Prix de l'Abbaye in 1984

lovely posters  as we think about sprinters past . lochsong ; first handicap rated 70 , ended up being about 125 ... one of the abbaye wins we took a bottle of wine over  the far side of the longchamp sprint course and sat near the rail she came up . thought it was a false start she won so easily , you couldnt hear the rest just frankie screaming !

Was at York the day Solinus won ( in the Schwartz colours)  - Smarten Up was runner up and ended up being the dam of a future winner of the race Cadeaux Genereux. Maybe not a vintage renewal ( Epsom Imp third), but Solinus had also won the King's Stand and July Cup, so was a worthy sprint champion that year.

I remember seeing bellotto of Jeremy trees win the acomb and was sure he would win the following years derby however he only managed third not saying he would have beaten reference point but pat could have given him a better chance.
