I do not know about on-course bookies. Online bookies will keep your money (won or deposited) regardless if verification was inadequate or unsatisfactory. That's legalised theft, yet tolerated and accepted by Gambling Commission.

Almost all racecourses make bookmakers pay online for the betting badges problems here been caused by the banks who clearly want to dictate to the country

My bank of 46 years did a due diligence (called enhance something) on me and threatened account closure within a month (yes one month) if I'd not co-operate or able to verify my monthly deposits satisfactorily including the small ones; I'd have a few biggies on money transfers (they were only 2.4/3.5% for 24 months) then. I was disappointed, but more flabbergasted given my history with them. Maybe I chose not to use their credit card instead (0 balance).
I'd only ever paid a £25 penalty charge for being overdrawn without permission merely for 4hrs. This was rescinded when I went to see the bank manager the next day unannounced - one could then, and I was a student. |

The Banks want a cashless society. That way they get a cut of every transaction made. On course Bookies paying in and taking out cash do not fit their business model.
I bank with Halifax/LLoyds. Had a busy body e mail from them last year asking if I wanted to talk about my gambling which they know about because I bet on line. Told them to mind their own business. So I tend to use cash when I can for privacy. If they can disclose a public figures details they wont think twice about Joe Soap's. Better off not letting the nosey parkers know what you spend your cash on. Same goes for loyalty cards and the like. Jockey Club Racecourses make you pay on, line with a fee to a booking agent as well. They will get a cut of the booking fee so in effect it is a price increase on admission for them. I wont go to any of them now for that reason or spend with a card on course for over priced food and drink. As for six monthly affordability checks-----If they come in I am out of the game. The Industry is killing itself. |

The way the banks are treating many people nowadays,would be a little more acceptable if we could choose to have accounts however we have no choice anymore you must have one to survive life.

Agree jimnast. I can remember the days when you could get by without a bank account. A weekly pay packet with the notes poking out of a corner so you could check without opening was a delight to behold. Managing cash for w week was easier too. The monthly salary was the beginning of the end.

I did payroll for my Dad's company for awhile in the mid 80's and nearly everyone was paid in cash. So Friday morning I'd go to the bank, write out a cheque payable to cash and collect between 20-30K with no trouble at all.
Imagine trying to do that today. |

About 3 months ago towards a part payment for a car. The denomination was mainly in £50. I was immediately after another withdrawing the same amount. The bloke was told his request for another £16k would have to be monday.

Yes. I told them for a car. I think this could explain why they did a due diligence on me. When I googled to find out why a bank would do that apparently anyone deemed a higher risk of money laundering.
Also, at the beginning of the pandemic I popped in to deposit over £5k cash (money I kept for emergency) to buy a car online worth £11k. I was asked the source of money. I told the lady at the counter I borrowed from a friend; she then asked if I knew the seller of the car. |

Halifax is £1,500 without having to order. Had quite a bit of building work doe lately, Plumber, Plasterer & Joiner all wanted cash. After 2 or 3 visits to the bank I was asked what the cash was for. Told them the truth, a lot of them want to keep under that VAT threshold and when they near it only work for cash or not at all.
Cash keeps the black market flowing and the darker stuff, drugs, sex industry etc too. Cannot sell scrap for cash anymore, used to be a good pocket liner when we were young. |

Halifax is my bank barstool. Last time I asked them maybe 5 years ago it was £300 out the machine + £300 counter so total £600. But maybe it's just customers they like !

I withdrew £1,700 from Halifax last week with no prior notice , as with Barstool was asked what the money was for and again no reason not to be truthful.

I remembered using a Nationwide credit card to deposit £800 at 2.5% here to hedge against Don Cossack in the Gold Cup - I'd about £1200 running on at 7/4. No question asked then.

On a serious note I see the Chinese and the Asians both depositing and withdrawing large sums of cash yet they never seem to be asked where’s its come from or where’s it going. |

I'd an arrangement for a withdrawal of £6k for a car locally. I changed my mind instead buying from Newcastle; the bank staff said it was for London. Anyway, produced a few id requested and the money duly handed over.
Talking about immigrants depositing. Just recently I was returning an Amazon item at a local Post Office. A scruffy Asian infront asked the lady counter staff what the max was for a deposit overseas? Came the reply £5k; he casually fished out £50 notes from his pocket. I think he knew what the max was. |
