Question just now - multiple choice, "which flat race run over a mile forms part of the "Spring Double". Cheltenham Gold Cup, Lincoln Handicap, 2000Gns?"
12 contestants, 10 of them said Cheltenham Gold Cup. Of the other two, only one got the right flat race.
If ever you needed proof of the decline of horse racing in the minds of the British public, there it is with knobs on! I'd guess that if you'd asked that 60 years ago, very few would have got it wrong.

The 'Spring Double' was always known as the Lincoln and Grand National, but 'flat' and 'mile' rule the latter race out
Report longbridge July 26, 2023 2:06 PM BST
@A.i.S

The Lincoln is a flat race run over a mile?
Report stewarts rise July 26, 2023 2:09 PM BST
I think he knows that longbridge, but the GN wasn't in the question.
Report longbridge July 26, 2023 2:15 PM BST
I guess so - I just wondered what his quibble is?  The only one in the list that is part of the Spring Double is the Lincoln, and that is a flat race over a mile.
Report stewarts rise July 26, 2023 2:20 PM BST
Don't think he's quibbling as such just didn't read the question correctly, we know the answer but the fact 10 people thought was the CGC is rather perturbing and as Steerforth points out, shows how much racing is not in most peoples knowledge now.

We are a dying breed!Sad

Not being funny Stewart’s but not a huge amount of racing people would know the answer, so can’t have the declining angle at all. My mrs bets on nags every Saturday, plus for years but if I asked her about the spring or autumn double she wouldn’t have a clue.

Nothing to hang your hat on in this regard I’d say
Report stewarts rise July 26, 2023 2:32 PM BST
Sure most people interested in racing of my vintage would know Harry, not trying to be sexist or rude but i don't think the Mrs really counts.Crazy
Report harry callaghan July 26, 2023 2:34 PM BST
She bets more than me and does alright. My point is I’m not sure the percentages would be much higher in any pole even 15/20 years ago
Report harry callaghan July 26, 2023 2:35 PM BST
I’ll ask her later just to see

Asked my missus a few sporting questions a few weeks ago , she thought Henry Cecil was a snooker player.
Report stewarts rise July 26, 2023 2:39 PM BST
Go ahead Harry, make my day.Grin Remember you've got to ask her just one question: Do you know what the Spring Double is in horse racing, Well do ya Love?
Report harry callaghan July 26, 2023 2:41 PM BST
In all fairness it’s all me and her watch sport. She’d be ok on most sports tbf to her
Report harry callaghan July 26, 2023 2:43 PM BST
I will Stewart’s just to make your day. I’ll give her the same question as above though with the multiple choice, as that is the question in question after all
Report steerforth July 26, 2023 2:43 PM BST
Yeah thats the point of he quiz - you're eliminated if you give the "impossible" answer, so the participants have to avoid saying the Gold Cup. So even if not sure, all you needed to do to stay in the game is to avoid giving the jumps race.

My Daughter was on Impossible once, she got a racing question,
where is The St Leger run ? She got it right thankfully as she's been brainwashed with racing since she was a babyHappy

I worked in LBOs from 70s to early 80s, those days the Ante post lists were in the Life and Chronicle daily from probably February, do agree with the decline in Betting offices since BF got off the ground has stopped people talking to one another and the Spring double hardly gets a mention anywhere.

That made me smile Hayden.

Longbridge

No quibble at all, apologies if i wasn't clear.

If older racing fans were asked what the Spring Double is, many would answer correctly, Lincoln and GN, but the BBC question adds a proviso in 'flat' and 'mile' that invalidates the correct answer
Report Brian July 26, 2023 3:06 PM BST
Certainly in the 60s, the Spring Double was very big, Even if you didn't do the double , most people I knew would have known what it was. I loved getting the large white voucher back from bookies's head office with the bet and potential winnings.

the question "was forms part of"

I actually see my mistake

PART of the Spring Double
Report Andrew.in.Sweden July 26, 2023 3:07 PM BST
Thanks Dave, beat me to it, but i realised after reading the question again
Report scrabbler July 26, 2023 3:52 PM BST
I'd guess that many people would think that Spring Double was a type of mattress if given that as a possible answer.

Autumn Double, Camb and Ces
Report harry callaghan July 26, 2023 6:03 PM BST
She got it Stewart’s, absolute miracle I’d say but she’s very pleased with herself

Some of us men have no faith in the inferior race. I suppose she is 11 years younger than me and has had the form book rammed into her for 13 years…thankfully she’s off outGrin
