the 2nd race at hamilton is an example of what happens when you do in chunk of your tank recklessly in a short time, as i have just done-again

didnt like the jolly and laid it but because ive been ironing it out on allsorts recently i bottled it and went green, as i didnt do earlier today at nott when the jolly fell out and won

its not just the moolah you lose but the money you dont win because youve done in so much where you were just being lazy and betting needlessly. or after too much sherebert

Backed Beltane in the 19.15 at Ponte at 4s this morning and congratulated myself as it was backed into 9/4 on course . Ran like a 20/1 shot -so no , not today .

You should have backed Beltane in the last at Brighton in August 2001, the one trained by William de Best-Turner (£7,500 to £300 on the rails with Ladbrokes here, oi, oi).

The trouble with wins like that is that the memory of them ensures you're still giving it back 22 years later.

sfb, so you backed his only other winner too then?!

Yes. It's the 22 years between them which has been the problem.

Swifty ... it had been a dreadful afternoon at Brighton in 2001. I'd done a couple of grand, and by the last I had about £100 of readies left. On the basis of its form in a Windsor maiden, I'd made Beltane joint fav for the race (an apprentice handicap, running off 37). At 25/1 I should had £300 on it according to my staking system at the time. I was that close to leaving the track without backing it. I thought to myself, if I don't back it, and it gets beat (which you'd expect - look who was training it), I could at least pretend I'd had a £300 win.

But I had a credit account with Ladbrokes back then, John Best was standing on the rails, and, as rico says, we're all degenerates really. So I asked Bates for a £7,500 to £300, and he laid it.

I can't describe the mood as I sat on the open top of the double-decker back down to the station afterwards. The sun shone, light glittered on the waves, and angels were singing in heaven.

mitolo - It still doesn't describe the mood of doing your b0ll0cks for race after race, while everyone around you is winning, then smashing your way out of it in the last. Not just smashing your way out of it, but pocketing the sort of win which keeps the wolves from the door for the foreseeable future.

The heavenly hosts do indeed descend upon you, but it's the intoxication of the moment which can't be beaten. That moment when, just for once, you're not merely hanging on by your fingertips. Instead, you've picked up the ball on your own goal line, dribbled around ten opponents, ignored all your team mates, and blasted the ball into the top corner to win the World Cup for your country. It's as though you're almost outside your body watching that moment being replayed again and again, the world dazzled by your shrewdness and your greatness.

That's why I keep doing it anyway. I want that feeling one more time.

Mind you. The mirror image - when you have a bet which you know you really shouldn't have had, and the bet duly goes down the tubes. Is there a worse feeling of shame and self-loathing? And the whole world is looking at you as well. THEY haven't arrogantly blundered their way into trouble, have they? It's just you in despair, and you deserve it too.

Awful.

sfb, great bit of reminiscing that, and as you say that's why we all do it if truth be told, we are all secretly masochists but those kind of wins make the whole thing worth the effort, you just don't get that kick from anything else(well, legally maybe!). I'm not mad on Brighton but that bus trip back down on a sunny 'winning' day, well, there are worse ways to spend an afternoon!
By:

I can identify with that SFB. One day you just know a horse is going to win -you've priced it up at 2/1 but you've missed that and the 15/8 but hey 7/4 isn't really that different and after all, it is going to win. So you back it but of course it loses and you curse yourself for your stupidity. It was a bet a 2/1 but not below -why did you do it? And the next day there's another 2/1 shot that's trading at 15/8 -ha won't be caught out again . And it not just wins but it hoses up -you could call it a winner a furlong out. And you curse yourself -was it  really 2/1 -surely  it could have been 7/4 and you could have backed it 15/8.

when you 'know' it's going to win, don't be a moron have more on. Probably the quick way to the poor house.
