No more information in the Guardian's obituary:-
Among other roles before journalism, Derek was an amateur national hunt jockey and spent three years acting in provincial rep. Although it does contain this marvellous sentence: The memoir records Douglas’s kindness, even though Derek had learned shortly after his death that the Italian ambassador to Britain was his biological father. https://www.theguardian.com/film/2023/jul/17/derek-malcolm-obituary |

I think this is largely BS. I couldn't find any evidence of Derek Malcolm riding under rules in the 50s, so I contacted John Randall at the RP, and he looked at Ruff's Guide for the 50s (which has a list of winning riders each year), and said there's no record of Derek riding any winners under rules. He also said that Richard Baerlein was the first racing correspondent the Guardian ever appointed, so it seems that Derek rather embellished his CV, and the Telegraph and Guardian have swallowed his story.
