As a 3rd world country it’s not surprising they got the figures wrong and can’t honour there promise.

The woke 'slave-trade' activists will be beside themselves.

Don't blame them, it cost Birmingham aka the Government 800 million to but it on. just a jolly for counties that hate us. It was only the queen that they respected.

Leader of Birmingham council says it was a huge success and the city and surrounding areas are thriving due to the hosting the games ,obviously a country like Australia not up to it.

Can't see much thriving going on in Birmingham to be honest. Skiving, shooting, stabbing, robbing, begging, drug dealing yes.

The fat lady hasn't sung yet https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-australia-66229577

Fifteen months ago, a proud Daniel Andrews strode into a regional Australian stadium and announced Victoria would host the 2026 Commonwealth Games - promising "a games like no other".

But on Tuesday Mr Andrews - decidedly less jubilant - faced a media pack as he tersely revealed the state would walk away from its contract.

It throws plans for the event into chaos and the future of the Games into doubt.

no doubt one of those fabulous african states we give fortunes to will step in

Too many sports include these days to be affordable. Just have it for track and field and set high qualifying standards to keep out the no hopers.
Would cut the costs down a fair whack.

From a personal view, could not give a monkeys either way, same with the Olympics.

Same here barstool , only sport i've ever watched in any Olympics is Ice Hockey.

Probably don't need to fly halfway round the world for things like weightlifting. Just tell them all to go to their nearest gym and do it via a video call. Boy in Melbournes just lifted 150kg. Stick 155kg on the bar in Walsall. On you go.

Instead of boxing just have the old punchball machine.

3 shots each, hardest progesses to the next round.

I don't understand why hosting a Games is not profitable. Huge TV revenue, advertising sponsors, ticket sales. They don't have to build new facilities from scratch if they have a decent running track, swimming pool etc. what is the problem? I suspect that it is the "judges" of the bids and the organisers that need to change their attitude (and book a 4 star hotel room when they attend at their own expense as they should) Each country can pay for the transport and accommodation of competitors so why does it cost £3 billion? Otherwise the Olympics will go the same way.

Rwanda may take it. Cue a rush of woke BBC presenters who suddenly find the place is now fine.  Like Lineker and co who suddenly forgot the slavery and abuses going on in Qatar once there was a world cup jolly on offer there.

I do enjoy these events and can't understand why those in charge seem to choose the host city/country that bids the highest amount of money and incur a big loss. How much do the Grand Slam tennis or golf venues lose from their events? Nothing of course because they are able to raise far more money from media and ticket sales than they spend on staging it. They need to separate it from politics and have perhaps 6 venues that rotate over 24 years which would allow each one to know for sure when they are next in line and make sensible improvements to facilities when necessary. The Olympics are notorious for building fancy new stadia which are falling down and covered in weeds within 3 years.

Does that mean the Commonwealth spirit is "dead"? Commerce before welfare and brotherhood.

I wonder what Queen Elizabeth II would have said if she'd been alive.
Report sageform July 19, 2023 11:08 AM BST
She certainly would not have supported something that impoverished a part of the Commonwealth every 4 years. Far too many people expect a jolly at tax payers expense on these occasions, including developers, consultants, politicians etc.
