How big is the market for racing memorabilia? Frankie seems to be dumping one heck of a lot of stuff. Having said that, it is mostly trophies which do have a certain decorative value.

And why does Frankie, who has dozens of kids and horses, want to live in London anyway? It doesn't sound like he has thought this through.

London is a shaithall, wouldn't want to live there.

London is the finest city in the world but is not natural horseriding country.

This looks like the classic retirement mistake of moving to some supposed idyll and hate it after six months because your routine, your friends, your life is where you lived for the last several decades.

London was ranked as one of the worst cities in the world to live as an expat — even before the coronavirus pandemic hit.

That is according to the annual Expat Insider 2020 report by InterNations, which surveyed more than 15,000 expatriates representing 173 nationalities and living in 181 countries. For a city to be featured in the Expat City Ranking 2020, a sample size of at least 50 survey participants per city was required.

Out of the 66 cities, London ranked 51st.

Surprised to see a trophy for winning this years Oaks on Soul Sister already up for auction, only had it a month.
29% charges on top of winning bid, it's worse than the tote take out.

Also London ranks 46 according to global liveability index 2023. It's shaite.

So we are agreed then, Gaze733, that Frankie should not move to London.

Understandably perhaps, this auction is more about what he is NOT selling. E.G. Virtually no Group 1 stuff. Despite the excellent provenance, much of this stuff has limited collectors appeal. The Italian stuff is a very narrow market, the silver plate is ordinary, most of the cut glass is also ordinary. Silver and Gold scrap prices will underpin some of those items. Bit underwhelming really!

It's mostly tat.

Having looked at the catalogue in detail, I think this might be a "test the market" auction". Possibly to be followed by several others with better stuff. Hard to be precise about the numbers as the catalogue descriptions are a bit haphazard. BUT, he is selling just FOUR British Group 1 trophies representing about 3% of his total British Group 1 wins. Similar story elsewhere, except Ireland where items on offer represent 17% of his Group 1's and Italy where he is offloading more than half.

Lots of bids in already but beware of trophies, if it does not say silver, it is NOT. If it says silver it should have a stated weight BUT unlike many auctioneers they do not use the term "weighable silver" so the quoted weight includes other stuff such as the stand, mount etc. A good example is Swains Irish Champion Stakes Trophy which is quoted at a whopping 49oz, but is merely a silver plaque mounted on a stone block. If all silver this would be about £700 scrap.
