3/1-9/1 That's not guessing. First horse beat, and a worse than pathetic performance. The one in the first race had been weak in the market for the last week, and stopped to nothing in the final furlong.

Trainer couldn't have produced two bigger duffers, but had given no indication of any problems whatsoever.

Egan was talking up its chances this morning as well.  Like you say the laying was ridiculous they couldnt offer big enough odds in that last 2 minutes.

Should be checked, however would have no doubt about an integrity issue, maybe someone felt the ground got to fast...you do not know until you try.

Being very well backed unlike Sakheer and Eldar, will probably win now.

As sometimes happens with jockeys, when things aren’t going well they make the wrong decision, Egan had to come outside in the home straight but decided to go back inside and met trouble

Sakheer, a classy juvenile last season, is set for a spell on the sidelines after his tame effort in Friday's Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot.

Trained by Roger Varian for KHK Racing Ltd, he won the Mill Reef last term and was seventh in the 2,000 Guineas last month, but trailed home by 29 lengths at Ascot.

A statement on Varian's website on Monday read: "Unfortunately Sakheer is not 100 per cent following his run in the Commonwealth Cup at Royal Ascot on Friday. He is currently unsound and being investigated for a front-limb lameness.

"He will require a period of time out of training but will return to the track later in the year. While this is obviously disappointing, it does go some way to explaining his below-par performance."

as rancid as it gets..and from a top yard.
Report LoyalHoncho June 27, 2023 7:56 AM BST
Agreed.  The key word used by Mr Varian's "spokesman" is "following".  Which of course means after.  How then did so many bookmakers and punters know before the off that the horse couldn't ( and wouldn't ) win?, as witnessed by the huge drift in the highly liquid pre-off market?
slippy, being the forum gentleman that he is, simply ( and generously ) called the drift ugly.
For me it is one of two different things.
It is either rank stable incompetence, knowingly or otherwise, bringing un unfit horse to the races or it is a fraud upon the racing public.
Deal with it BHA.

3/1 to double figs at RA is incredible..110% without a doubt people knew that wernt winning...would varian send a gr1 horse to RA knowing it has a problem? shirley knott.

but,people did.

There's a huge whiff over this, or at least there should be. I backed the horse at 10/1 straight after the Guineas thinking I had been quite clever. The last thing I expected was that I could have got a similar price on the day. It made no sense at all. Perhaps if Varian had a 'jack the lad' image rather than the honest Joe schoolteacher look more questions might be asked. This is a guy with a big yard who has employed Atzeni, and now uses Egan. That in itself is alarming. If the horse had problems leading up to the race there is zero chance that Varian is going to come clean. Likely loses horse, owners, and credibility. In fact image blown to pieces.
Report Cider June 27, 2023 7:19 PM BST
The most obvious explanation is that he disappointed (or has been disappointing) in a gallop or something of that nature, and some heavy players were aware. As I mentioned on the race thread, there must be a possibility that he simply hasn't trained on, as to fetch what he did as a breeze up he must have been reasonably precocious and drilled. If he was a dud they could have put him through the sales and made far more than whatever could be made on the pink side. The owner or the trainer being involved in anything dodgy seems completely implausible, as does risking him with a known injury. Egan at least thought he was going well enough at one point.

Obviously only betfair will know who was taking everything being offered, and if there is a pattern to the laying.
Report Cider June 27, 2023 7:25 PM BST
What can be said with some certainty I feel is that there are some heavy players that have insight into the Varian yard. The application of money is quite often rewarded. It has been evident going the other way, too.

Racing bent as fcuk , jockeys , trainers & owners all playing their part!
Why wouldn`t it be ? Perfect opportunity to make money without have to rob banks.
As i have always said , racing became far more corrupt due to the betting exchanges ,
A loser can be guaranteed , a winner can not be. You can be 100% nailed on backing a loser if you are in the know . Fact!
Report Cider June 27, 2023 7:30 PM BST
Not with a very valuable 3yo at RA with a smashing chance on paper! With Sakheer, it appears people in the market definitely had knowledge that wasn't public, but it's a million that the knowledge was that he was lame.

We don't know the true going

Ground dries out and gets quicker, horse prefers softer ground and more of a slog it's just one of them things really

Report LoyalHoncho June 28, 2023 1:24 AM BST
Great point.  It certainly did me.
It is atrocious what has happened here and Varian must know something.  If he doesn;t then as trainer and top man at the yard he can't be up to much.
The horse should never have run - that is pretty clear.

Jinxy....100% correct mate, after 50 plus years punting I have sadly come to the same conclusion. A perfect storm of Betting exchanges, poor prize money, huge running costs for trainers and owners which has led us to this point in time when the game is corrupt beyonfd belief. One of the best punters I have ever known, a complete genius who has made hundreds of thousands previously now only plays in pound bets becuase he quickly realised how bent the game has become. All the cheating ios made even easier by the BHA turning a blind eye while the stewards accept any old rubbish as excuses for poor performance or suspect rides.

Report basilbrush June 28, 2023 5:54 PM BST
Seen everything, including his betfair balance, very clever guy, used to give me winners left right and centre some times at huge prices, very rare for his tips not to win. Like I say he bets in pounds nowadays as he has lost all faith in the results. His biggest bet this year by far was on Man City to win premiership, pennies on horses.
