Let me put it another way. Has anyone ever seen a seven race card with six maidens and one  condition race?



The answer is no and this will never change. You will never see a handicap race where every runner is 'close' to each other.


Why? The handicapper has very rarely got it right..

Newmarket in October has a fixture with usually 5 novice/ maiden races

Most owners own handicapper’s probably fair to let them see there pride and joy run.

Couldn't think of anything worse than a card made up of maiden races, each to their own though.

Regarding your opening post, jimnast makes a fair point,its not easy winning a amaiden when your up against all the six figure, immaculately bred Arab owned purchases. The only chance the majority of horses have of winning a race is in a handicap.
If it is 90% handicaps today then that must surely be good for you because it gives you time to study the other 10%, unless that's not enough races for you to punt in

The less races we bet in the more chance we should have so you can ignore most of these handicaps especially the 3 year old only ones.

The Americans manage well enough without all these handicaps so perhaps we should look at other types of races.

Royal hunt cup,Britannia and the Wokingham all coming up finding the winners could reward well.

It isn't just Saturday it's every day. You just get slightly better one's at the weekend.

Punters should just be honest with themselves. Those who appear to delight in these races are just hoping that the odd big priced winner will pay for all the losers. For the vast majority it won't.

In recent years they have even added more handicaps to the likes of Royal Ascot. The original one's were difficult enough.

I don't want a card with loads of maidens/novice hurdles/novice chases and condition races, just a fair crack of the whip if I decided to go to a meeting. And that's highly unlikely when I can stay at home and pick and chose. Funnily enough my Nap today runs in a handicap.


But if you look at the overall picture it's always a Saturday when the meetings are polluted with tricky handicaps and it's no coincidence that plenty have a day out at the races for a bit of entertainment. 99% of these have no idea of the game betting wise.

Very few books go home complaining as there satchels are bulging.

Handicaps are my favourite type of race,especially class 2 Heritage handicaps. The reason for this is simple.There is form history available.The races I avoid are 2yo/maiden/Nursery h/caps/3yo races until after the 2000 gns has been run and even then only if have been against older horses.The way I look at it is, in a twenty runner maiden there could be an unraced Frankel or an Enable in the field, I have no way of knowing. The same applies to NH. I Avoid novice hurdlers/chasers/3yo hurdlers.In my opinion only racecourse form matters.I should add that Group Races form is always looked upon by myself as solid.I have to say that 8 meetings on any day is way too many.
