Was great "back along" (20 years ago) when the betfair place markets told me the true price before bookies realised we could invert their margins.

Today, I see no future. Everything 1/5 odds, extra places subject to s**t prices, no BOG, and bookies reneging on the extra places when a NR pops up. ISP lowing its foot into the throat of those the industry would deem "wiseguys."

Aside from that, it seems the culture among jockeys is to pull their horse from the frame when they find they cannot win.

If anybody makes money from EW betting, I would love to hear. I would love to stick it to Skybet.

Does anybody make money from place betting.

What question are you actually asking united, place betting and ew betting completely different entities? I expect most would rather have the modern day ew concessions as opposed to the nr scenario of 1/4 the odds 3 places in a 16runner handicap becoming 15 etc!!!?

Plenty of past , present and future in each way betting biscuit , especially acca's in mathematically selected races.

If you're moaning everything is 1/5th then the only advice i can give is to seek out and restrict your wagers to races that would be 1/8th or even worse if the bookmakers could operationally apply , then get stuck in by dictating your own bets as opposed to being sucked into extra place races that are still mathematically far too over round to exploit.

You'll need three things a) patience , b) a syndicate and c) the ability not only to wait for the opportunities but also NOT to subsidise other guesses with shrewdly made profits.

There used to be an angle whereby the traditional bookmakers win market advantage could be turned to the backers' ew advantage by picking the right races.

As far as my abilities go, that advantage has all gone. But would love to hear that others are still making it pay. They don't have to tell me how - just to know it is still doable is enough. Cos I'm minded to give up on ew betting altogether - and would avoid the place markets on the exchange for the same reason.

What do mean by a syndicate, Hayden? I'm up for joining.

I used to like place betting best with some hand-droppers being good to bet against. But nowadays there are so many hand-droppers that it's hard to know where to start. I guess the stewards don't feel like they can punish BOTH hand-droppers AND over-whippers - but I thought it was possible to ride a horse out even without resort to the whip. Watch races in silence and spot at least half the field not bothering most of the time. Rancid game - but we have a choice.

There's no angle backing place on the exchange biscuit , anyone backing in that market is just playing a personal fancy as it's a 100% book.

Syndicate is to get on around the country on opportunity days , using shops hundreds of miles apart with sensible staking.

If you're just picking horses you fancy in any race that happens to be running next , then making it an e/way bet without giving any thought to the type of race you're getting involved in , or without any criteria for selection , then you're big odds to make long term profit.

Just because a bookie offers and extra place or two and therefore dictates the race bet in , it doesn't necessarily make it a value bet.

In my view the old level stake restricted EW bet is long past his sell by date when punters can now choose to have say 30% win and 70% place etc. on here.

If there is no future in each-way betting there is no future in betting. Six or more bookmaker handicaps per card does not easily lend itself to win only betting.

Given the number of short price reverses in the non-handicaps you couldn't possibly rely on always getting those right win only.

Why do you want to restrict yourself to level stakes EW betting when you can bet win and place on here?

To answer your question.

Yes, I have had several accounts closed, and some as good as closed by restrictions, but for low stakes have only had a couple of losing years in the last twenty. It works for me so I haven't felt the need to change.

Sorry if this being naive, but you can bet place only (I don't) online so what's the difference?

Hello sparrow

I would say about 80% of my bets were the traditional ew terms and have been for many years ,I know on many occasions you state how good it is to bet place only on here which is fine ,as with those who play in running which isn’t for me ,but that doesn’t matter because so long as you can get a few quid at the game it doesn’t really matter how so long as you do.

Each way betting is better than win and place betting are you saying diff. drum?  If so then you very much surprise me but if you have made it pay ok then fair enough.

jimnast, I suppose we allhave our different way of doing things but it must be at least 20 years since I did an old EW bet.

That’s absolutely fine sparrow it suits you can you imagine how pointless this game would be if we all did the same.

I ask because I'm not a regular in the shops. Say you fancy one at 20/1 and you want to stick 50EW. Can you still stick 75 win and 25 place at 20/1? Some staff have not got a clue RE: this bet but I'm fairly sure you can do this? tia.

The bet you quote is perfectly acceptable stewarty - if you have a particularly clueless/pedantic person behind the counter, you can do it as 2 bets instead i.e. £50 win & £25 each way is exactly the same as £75 win & £25 place.

This thread (apart from Haydens post) is far to general. Each way betting (deployed correctly) should be in everybody's tool-box imo

Each way betting can be some of the very best value you will ever get under the right circumstances and (in the wrong circumstances) it can also be absolutely terrible value!

People that never bet each way are just as mad as the people that always bet each way imo.

Pick your time and place correctly, it's your best friend!

Thanks for that TM. I was sure I was correct and it makes perfect sense what I have highlighted. Furthermore, it basically means that if you fancy lesser prices you can do four races at the same bet....hoping for all to place and det your money back if all placed.

Or to put it another way, if all are 10/1 at 1/5th the odds and are placed it's still a tidy return.

To lessen your stake if placed but if you did two 3/1 shots you will profit if both are placed.

I spoke about too much handicaps earlier but you can actually do your own placepot.

IE. You can pick two selections from three different meetings and 'easier' races. A fiver EW Acca will give you a return and your stake back+ if all placed. You can even stick in two odds on chances if you wish and still make a profit if each selection is place.....and with the added bonus that they can all win.

A pal of mine stuck on a fiver placepot at Perth one day. The six all won and it paid £16. Had he done a £1 Acca I think it came to 1200. Yes, he was gutted.

It's like if I put on 3x*doubles and the same stake for the treble....not for me. If I'm willing to stake £100 I will do 3x£20 doubles and a £40 treble because it's the treble that really boosts it if they all oblige.

My 10:20 post (above) also applies to this imo - there is a time and a place for it. Sometimes you may wish to bet win only, sometimes place only and sometimes both. For me it would depend on the shape of the race and the shape of the betting. My approach would be similar to my approach to EW betting, i.e. dictated by number of runners, number of places, price of favourite and the shape of the betting. Also running style, the draw, and many other factors.

So no bet or betting style is better than another (imo), there is a time and a place for all of them!

There are all kinds of 3/1 shots - you might have betting where it's the 3/1 2nd fav versus a 1/3 fav and the rest are any price you like. You might have a 3/1 fav in a race where a host of others are between 4/1-7/1. The same applies to a 50/1 shot - it might be the outsider of the lot or it could be the 4th co-fav.

The way you'd approach those different scenarios should vary (imo) and would be dictated by the factors I have stated above.

Btw TM just seen one of your replies, unless things have changed where bookies take place only bets the bet would have to be written as two separate bets i.e £50 win £25 ew as you say,how I always wrote similar on a slip. Not having been in a shop for near 20 years so could be wrong in that the bookies software would not be set up to settle the £25 place?
