If the PJA had any backbone imo
1) they would have resisted these rules being implemented in the first place
2) They'd all be out on strike now

They absolutely walk all over the jockeys, imo -
1. Took their right away to ride at more than one meeting a day - under the cover of "covid", and when the "pandemic" was over, claimed they'd sent some surveys out and that the jockeys were in favour of it. Hmmmm.
2. Took the saunas away, also under the cover of "covid" and then didn't give them back - an act Adam Kirby compared to taking away a chipper's tools.
3. Pissed them about regarding the 3lb allowance, also brought in under the cover of "covid".

I would be questioning why any the bans are suspended. They have got the bans because they have broken the rules. That's what happens.
The authorities have long bent over backwards to appease the jocks. If they don't like the counting, and the bans, just get rid of the whip.

The mental welfare of these jockeys must be a concern. A month sat on your hands wondering why you're getting mullered for over-trying for the yard, owner[s].
Time on your hands for otherwise busy people is not conducive to their happiness.
Must be wondering if it's worth carrying on in a sport that's hard enough to make pay for many without lengthy bans.
Can they not get bans reduced if they attend 'education' classes etc.

Can't find the details behind Keilan Woods latest 42 day ban but here are those for his 18 day ban earlier in the year, I assume that further repeat offences have led to the longer ban under the totting up process. For the avoidance of doubt, I do agree with George and others re the ammunition this gives to the opposition, but it is hard to condone what appears to be consistent repeat offending.

Disciplinary Panel - Referrals from Racecourse 22 Dec 22
A hearing of the Disciplinary Panel of the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) : A referral from the Stewards at Sandown Park made on 3 December 2022 following their finding that the licensed jockey Mr Kielan Woods was in breach of Rule (F)45 of the Rules of Racing in that he had “used his whip above the permitted level from the 2nd last hurdle;” further that given their conclusion that the breach warranted a suspension of 2-6 days and that this was Mr Wood’s 5th such suspension in the previous 6 months that the matter should be referred to the Disciplinary Panel.
A: The Hearing - The referral was heard on 22 December 2022. The case for the BHA was presented by Mr Lyn Williams; Mr Woods was represented by Mr Rory Mac Neice. There were no objections to the constitution of the Panel.
B: The Race/Use of the whip - This was the 3rd race on the card at Sandown, the 1.10 Pertemps Network Handicap Hurdle Race (Class 2) (Pertemps Hurdle Series Qualifier) (GBB Race). Mr Woods rode WILDE ABOUT OSCAR (IRE). The Stewards found that he had used the whip 11 times after the 2nd last hurdle thus 3 times above the permitted limit. The said use of the whip was not in dispute. As set out above the Stewards referred the breach and cumulative breaches to the Panel.
C: Equine Welfare - A paramount concern of any right-thinking person involved in the sport is equine welfare and the Rule applies in that context. Accordingly, any breach of the Rule is a very serious matter.
D: Process in the hearing - Submissions were made on both sides. The Panel followed the guidelines. In brief the process can be summarised as follows:
I- to consider the appropriate penalty for the instant breach (here at Sandown); in this respect Mr Williams fairly and properly in our view conceded that in all the circumstances 1 use of the whip should be discounted. Thus this was a case of 2 excessive applications of the whip; Mr Williams submitted that a penalty of 4 days suspension was justified whereas Mr Mac Neice submitted that 2 days was the proper conclusion;
II- to then go on to add the conclusion in I to the matrix of the aggregate breaches ie taking into account the 5 previous offences in the previous 6 months and thus arriving at a single penalty commensurate with the overall gravity. Here the guidance indicates a range of 14-42 days and an entry point of 21 days. In that process further guidelines apply as to 4 particular factors;
III- then to defer ⅓ of the suspension for an appropriate period;
IV- then to consider reference of the Jockey to training as to use of the whip.
E. Particular Findings - Having considered submissions and taking into account the 4 further factors of suggested guidance which we do not set out more fully here, we decided as follows:
I- the proper penalty for the instant Sandown breach was one of 4 days suspension. We concluded that the uses of the whip were full and deliberate;
II- thereafter in considering the matrix we did find that there were mitigating features:
A] That the number of rides in the 6 month period was at the comparatively high end ie 181 rides:
B] That the pattern of breaches was at a comparatively lower degree of gravity:
C] That there were 41 relevant rides without breach:
D] That there were no previous referrals in the last 3 years
III- We concluded that the breach and previous breaches should be marked in all the circumstances by suspension of Mr Wood’s licence for 18 days and that ⅓ of that period should be deferred for 2 months. As to training we accepted from Mr Woods that he had already arranged a day’s training and we made no order in that regard. The dates of the suspension will be 30 and 31 December 2022 and 1 to 10 January 2023 inclusive. One of those days to be for training.

Woods beaten a neck in a 3 way go to the line. Sat quietly on the hoss all the way round until the second last when the hoss was struggling for toe. Started running around some so said jockey got busy beating it like one of Steptoe's carpets. Thinking he was pot-committed after the last and almost got his steed up at the post.
I think a more effective punishment would be to allow them to keep riding but ban them from using the whip for a set period of time.
They would learn so much more and may actually evolve into far better jockeys because of it.
I have a funny feeling they would still get a few rides from the more supportive trainers.

If he had stopped cloutin wilde for oscar after eight clubs, and put his whip down with the hoss making ground on the front pair there would be a thread on 'ere questioning why he'd in effect, stopped riding.

This is utterly unbelievable and to say they are happy with the numbers just shows you !!!!!! There is only one thing to do now and that every jockey in the country sits down and don’t go out to play…

Suspensions,way out of perspective, punishment doesn't fit the crime imho. Didn't see much wrong with the old rules, now we have the crazy situation where you get punished more for trying than if you don't.
They don;t need to hand one out to D Egan in the 1.30, he dropped his hands at least 150 years out.

Sad that ITV Racing felt the need to make this front and centre of what should essentially be a preview show. As per usual Chapman just defends those he wants to keep onside. Just embarrassing. I am no fan of Fitzy and Weaver, but this week both spoke sensibly about the story.
