Chiedozie Ogbene appreciates every single moment that he’s involved in the senior Ireland set-up, whether in that moment he is scoring an overhead kick against Belgium or watching Evan Ferguson rip it up in training ahead of an end-of-year friendly.

“From the first day I’ve been here I’ve always said how privileged I am to be in this position,” he said yesterday.

“Many players miss out and I am here. We are all working so hard to be where we are and we never take this position for granted.

“I’ve seen players come here and not come back again. So to be called upon is obviously a huge honour for me.

“I take it seriously every time I am here and that’s why I have worked so hard to get my hamstring right, to hopefully get an opportunity against Norway or Malta.

“These caps mean a lot to me and my family. We all want to be here.

“Training today showed me how much players will put their bodies on the line to be here and to be available.”

Enthusiasm levels for tomorrow’s visit of Norway and for the trip to Malta on Sunday are generally higher than these games might arguably merit.

The absence of Erling Haaland has taken some of the star-quality sheen off the Norway game, while Malta is on the same day as the World Cup kick-off in Qatar.
