Apparently there is serious consideration into the government taking over the defined benefit pension liabilities of private companies, and investing it into high risk strategies. Most db pension funds are hedged, using 'low risk' gilts. If the plan was to be put into place, it would result in gilts being dumped onto the market. £billions of gilts. Which would of course, crush the market price and push the cost of servicing UK debt into the stratosphere. This plan that the Tories are considering, has emanated from the Tony Blair institute, apparently. This is the type of plan that would only be given an iota of credibility if you wanted to destroy the country. |
