Why is the stalls loading in this country so slow,American,Australian and French racing load their stalls much quicker. Some of the time horses are sat in the stalls for 4 minutes waiting for the others to load, sitting in the stalls for long periods of time must be some disadvantage. If there are fields of 12 or more runners they must know that its going to take at least 2 minutes to load them but they some times do not start the process until the off time.I know that if I back a horse and its loaded early and its sat there for a long time it makes me annoyed that it takes so long, also when it does happen my horse starts slower than the rest.

Sorry the other post took so long to be put up.

And there's often at least two horses fifty -not five- yards away from the stalls when every other horse has loaded .

We just don't seem to train them properly over here.
Report Ramruma June 3, 2023 11:48 AM BST
1) our stalls are narrower
2) our stalls are more rickety
3) some of our trainers are rubbish
4) American horses are trained on the track, so are used to the actual stalls used
5) some jockeys know it is to their advantage to go in last after rivals have been waiting several minutes

The combined effect of (1) and (2) makes it more likely our horses will be spooked by noises from and contact with the stalls. One reason our stalls are so bad is that racing is run like a travelling circus, driving stalls from course to course, so they have to be small and rickety.

Aidan O'Brien has complained about delays in loading (see 5).

In the US the horses have to earn a gate card before they race (given to them by stalls handlers, assuming the horse behaves). If they play up at the stalls before a race, they lose their gate card and have to re-earn it before they can race again.

I have watched American racing for years but never knew that ged but it makes plenty of sense and ought to be the case here. All we seem to do is make excuses blaming the stalls etc.

Some tracks (at least) have 'baby' stalls that the horses (maybe just the 2yos) go through when they go on to the track in the mornings to work. That obviously helps them to get habituated.

I do remember Jason Weaver speaking about the intensive stalls training he witnessed when based over there early in his career.

Another thing they do over there is load the horses in a particular order rather than our haphazard style which often ends up with the favourite going in last.
Report Cider June 3, 2023 1:10 PM BST
It's not random, it's odds then evens, or the other way around. Aside from that I believe trainers are given a certain amount of 'late load' cards to play. Presumably they play them on the fancied ones, more likely to be at the pointy end of the market.
Report sparrow June 3, 2023 1:12 PM BST
Not random for some but just for others. Laugh
Report Cider June 3, 2023 1:13 PM BST
It's not absolutely clear that you have an understanding of the word random.
Report sparrow June 3, 2023 1:15 PM BST
Nor you either cider. They either go in a particular order or they do not.
Report Cider June 3, 2023 1:20 PM BST
They do have an order, it is not haphazard. The authorities are aware that some horses have an aversion to waiting in the stalls for a long time, so grant trainers with a limited number of late load requests. You may or may not agree with the policy, however it's neither random, nor haphazard.

2.50 Doncaster 2yr olds not starting loading until off time,2 horses sat in stalls for over 4mins both fancied but ran unplaced.
Report big dunc June 3, 2023 3:26 PM BST
High number stalls opened late in the 3 20
Report tantpis June 3, 2023 3:41 PM BST
Result should have been void,4 horses stalls opened 1 second after the others in a 5 furlong sprint. These stewards have not got a clue 2 fancied horses had their race ruined, not even an enquiry.
Report tantpis June 3, 2023 3:45 PM BST
Racing is far behind other countries still using out of date stalls.
