I imagine he took time off for family reasons. His Racing UK broadcasting had become a bit eccentric, I remember around that time he was a handful for Nick Luck at Epsom one evening and when he refused to do any punditry for the Ayr Scottish Grand National meeting despite sitting in the studio all afternoon.
