An enquiry was held to consider the placings in this race after interference inside the final furlong involving the winner GIAVELLOTTO (IRE), ridden by Andrea Atzeni; QUICKTHORN, placed fourth, ridden by Oisin Murphy and BROOME (IRE), placed third, ridden by Ryan Moore. It was established that approximately half a furlong out GIAVELLOTTO (IRE) had shifted left-handed away from the whip causing QUICKTHORN to be significantly checked by its rider and in turn make solid contact with BROOME (IRE), which became unbalanced as a result. The Stewards considered that the interference had not improved GIAVELLOTTO (IRE)’s placing as the colt had quickened up nicely from behind QUICKTHORN and was getting the better of that gelding when the incident occurred, before beating him by 3 lengths. In relation to BROOME (IRE) it was found that the ground and momentum lost by that runner was less than the 1½ lengths, it was beaten by GIAVELLOTTO (IRE) and the placings also remained unaltered. Atzeni was suspended for 4 days for careless riding, as whilst Stewards acknowledged that GIAVELLOTTO (IRE) had initially shifted quickly left-handed away from the whip, which prompted the rider to stop using his whip and place both hands on the reins, he had thereafter made insufficient effort to correct or straighten his mount and recommenced riding a finish before being fully clear thereby continuing to cause interference to both QUICKTHORN and BROOME (IRE).
