The - "only up 3lb" - was NOT the work of the Handicapper
The - "up 3lb from last time" - was part of a 6lb Penalty - for Winning last time - when carrying a similar 5lb Penalty for it's previous to that 'last time ' run.... in other words - Sparks Fly last But One outing THE CURRENT 71 Rating (That it is presently Running off) is for Winning it's Last But One outing by 3 lengths from the 3rd Twilight Ridge) who has since run a closer 3rd, off the same Mark. Today - Sparks Fly was set to run off that 71 - PLUS a 6lb Penalty (NOT Raised 3lbs by Handicapper) - meaning it has Won off 77 Sparks Fly has Not been raised to 77 - But merely Ran Off 71 + Plus 6 EX = 77 We will Not know what the Handicapper has Raised Sparks Fly to - for it's LAST time 6 lengths Win - until Tomorrow (Tuesday afternoon. The Official Handicappers have until a Tuesday morning Deadline to File their Ratings Revisions for Last Week (during which Sparks Fly Won by 6 lengths, May 11th) Those Revisions then Apply to Races/HANDICAPS from the /this coming Saturday - Initial Entries for which have to be made by tomorrow Tuesday - with the New Revised Ratings then Applied, and Released as coming Saturday Racecards on Wednesday. SPARKS FLY can, therefore continue to run off 71 All this week, up to and including Friday Evening ... But with a Penalty Nowadays that will mean a 12 lb Penalty from hereon in ... whereas in the 'old days', you only got the One Single Penalty, no matter how many times you Won during the Penalty period ... Hence - Sir Mark Prescott racking up All those consecutive Wins under just a Single Penalty. They changed the Rules because of Sir Mark - and that. |

typo - Need to switch the light on - going dark now. |

It seems a bit pointless having handicapping if a quick turn round can beat the system.
Given it was 8/15 fav tells its own story. Perhaps a holding 7lb rise could be introduced after a win, until the new mark is announced. |

It, effectively, had a 'holding' 6lb rise (Penalty) .... 'until the new mark is announced'
I appreciate what you mean, though -I think. An automatic/arbitrary 7lb rise - PLUS a Penalty. Think you would find the Trainers Federation going ballistic over that one. ![]() What if you Won by just a Length? - Then 7lbs + Plus 6lb Penalty ![]() |

Quinault 2.40 Newmarket. Ran 3 days ago,
Out running the slow hcp system. It’s not really a fair hcp if the new assessment is pending. I refer to my earlier post, penalty plus 7lb holding uplift till assessed. Quick turnaround is clearly playing the system. |

Gallimimus 5.05 Leicester 8/13 fav.
Won yesterday, won again today 6 lb penalty. Clearly isn’t a hcp if it’s 8/13fav, Running again quickly, before hcper has reassessed the new rating,is clearly playing the system, this loop hole needs closing,it’s unfair on the other entries. The holding penalty needs to be higher for 1st,2nds and 3rds.losing horses are ok to run quick. |
