'I was shocked they didn't reverse the result' - rider stunned at controversial Killarney stewards' decision
Jody McGarvey said he was shocked by the stewards' decision not to reverse the result of a novice chase at Killarney on Sunday after Saldier cannoned into his mount Vina Ardanza over the last and connections have revealed that an appeal will be lodged.
Saldier held on by a nose in the 2m7f contest but only after giving Vina Ardanza a hefty bump when jumping the final fence and McGarvey felt the interference cost him at least half a length.
Not only was the rider of the runner-up surprised at the outcome but he was also perplexed that it took more than ten minutes after the race for the stewards to announce an inquiry on course.
The jockey said: "I was confident going into the stewards' room that I would get the race and I was shocked when I didn't.
"The way I look at it is that the bump I got cost me half a length, maybe even a length, and I lost by a nose. I was nearly knocked off and lost my balance so it had to cost me at least a half a length."
He added: "On my way back to the parade ring I looked at the big screen and didn't see any mention of an inquiry at all. I couldn't believe it. As I was weighing in I asked if there was any sign of an inquiry. There was still nothing announced even at that stage.
"Eventually they called one and I was confident they would change the result. I'd say I thought it was 70-30 in my favour, but they didn't change it and I have to say I was shocked."
The stewards' report stated: "Having viewed the recording of the race and considered the evidence, the raceday stewards were of the opinion that, while Saldier had caused interference to Vina Ardanza, on the balance of probabilities he had not improved his finishing position as a result of this interference, so they made no alteration to the judge’s placings, and therefore took no further action."
Eamon Waters of owners Alymer Stud will lodge an appeal against the decision of the stewards.
was a 50-50 imo..but to take 10 mins to call is just simply absolute imcompetence..
the irish stewards decision to accept racheal blackmores explanation was also bordering on insanity..
million pound sport ran by absolute and utter clowns.

The grey area for me is how far back can you go in respect of interference. In days gone by you just assumed it would have to be very close to the finish, but now it seems they are going further and further back. Where's the cut off? You could lose a couple of lengths at the second last. Can it be clarified?

Jockey should have objected , what hasn't been pointed out was that there was a Prize giving with about, and i kid you not , about 30 owners on th podium collecting , I assume , a trophy. I believe the embarrassment of then denying them their moment in the sun played a part in the decision to let the result stand. I would take 1/5 an appeal to be successful , quite clearly the second was impeded enough for a nose verdict to be turned around. Perhaps Specsavers should go to both Killarney and Killbeggan , stewards clearly can barely see the hands in front of their face.

But for 10 minutes it wasn't called. Kevin Blake has discussed this on his Weighed In podcast, he didn't see it live , but on watching the recording was amazed that the winner kept it, and thinks it will get it on appeal. One of the simplest decisions ever ,in his opinion.

laid Saldier early in the race as thought he wasnt travelling
disgusted he kept the race, joke decision even if accidental
bit optimistic of me to hope Betfair will refund if/when this is amended

come off it ol fruit. much as we dislike notfair you can not expect them to refund your loss
the stewards got this orribly wrong. one of the worst ive seen. blame them. i did a nice few quid at wuster this week in a very similar case. stewarding abroad is so much better, and instant. why are we so hopeless? i backed a horse in the u.s. the other day and it was chucked within a minute. and no complaint about it

the IHRB should be asking questions yet again regarding the conduct of on-course stewarding...
and then their decision was utter madness imv...
knocked sideways more or less and gets beat a nose...
stewards say it made no difference...
laughable (as i said at the time).

but a horse knocked almost sideways (accidental or not) didn't cost it at least a nose ?
come on Mr.Hunt...
wake up son.
if a horse interferes with another 2 out and costs it 2L and gets beat a diminishing nck or less then disq winner imo..------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------but a horse
Good old onlooker , his fascination with all things Irish never fails to astound me, especially when he thinks there might be a round of applause in it , same thing and worse happens every month minimum in the U.K. Does uncle onlooker highlight it , you must be kidding. I backed the winner and with double result so I was getting paid no matter what, and yes I thought it was a poor decision not to reverse it.Looking forward to Onlookers outrage next time something similar happens in U.K..Think I'll have a long wait though..
